春の習慣と儀式の歴史 - イギリス諸島の伝統

In this one-time class we will look at the pagan festivals that took place as the Celtic people welcomed the return of spring to the British Isles after the long, dark winter.  Come and find out how Imbolc (the first spring festival) and then Beltane were celebrated in the four nations of the British Isles, with fires, food and rituals to encourage health, wealth and a good season for growing crops.  We will also look at  La Na Caillich, April Fool's Day, well dressing, Jack-in-the-Green, maypole dancing and several egg-y traditions!

My classes are friendly and relaxed, with plenty of time for learners to add their thoughts and comments as we go along.  I use lots of images and maybe even a few moments of a video clip (to show maypole dancing or Jack-in-the-Green), but this class is much more discussion-based than lecture-style. I would also love to find out how learners may celebrate any spring festivals themselves.
