There are countless captivating stories across our beautiful British Isles, some rooted in fact and others in myth. You might be familiar with some, while others may be new to you. This class is a delightful journey into our rich heritage, offering a fun exploration of these tales. We start each class by greeting everyone and discovering what our students already know about the week’s topic. It’s great to see their enthusiasm and any special interests they might have. I introduce the weekly topic with a timeline when relevant, setting the scene to provide context for the story. While the class isn’t lecture-style, I use PowerPoints to show pictures of landscapes, artifacts, characters, and maps to bring the story to life. I encourage student participation, questions, and discussion through thoughtful prompts and quizzes with multiple-choice answers. With a small group size, everyone has the opportunity to join in, but if your child prefers to listen, that's perfectly fine—there’s plenty of room for individual preferences. If your child has any additional needs, just let me know. I’ll do my best to adapt the lesson to ensure they get the most out of it. **Schedule:** **2024** - **Week of 2nd September** - Finn McCool, the Irish Giant - **Week of 9th September** - All About the Little Folk: Fairies, Elves, Brownies, Boggarts, and More - **Week of 16th September** - Morris Dancers and Mummers: Folk Dancers and Folk Actors - **Week of 23rd September** - Mary Read and Anne Bonny: The Fierce Female Pirates - **Week of 30th September** - Dick Turpin, the Highwayman - **Week of 7th October** - Dick Whittington: Thrice Mayor of London, Rags to Riches, and His Famous Cat - **Week of 14th October** - The Selkie Bride and More About the Seal People - **Week of 21st October** - Boudica, Warrior Queen of the Iceni Tribe - **Week of 4th November** - Dragons of the British Isles - **Week of 11th November** - Gwenllian, the Welsh Warrior Princess - **Week of 18th November** - Wayland the Smith, Who Flew to England - **Week of 25th November** - Robin Hood, the Famous Outlaw - **Week of 2nd December** - Blackbeard, the Notorious Pirate - **Week of 9th December** - Tales of the Stones: Stonehenge and Beyond - **Week of 16th December** - Assipattle and the Mester Stoor Worm: A Tale from Orkney - **Week of 23rd December** - no class - **Week of 30th December** - Nessie, the Loch Ness Monster—Need I Say More? **2025** - **Week of 6th January** - King Arthur, the Once and Future King - **Week of 13th January** - Gelert, the Faithful Dog of Llewelyn the Great, Prince of Gwynedd in Wales - **Week of 20th January** - Finn McCool, the Irish Giant - **Week of 27th January** - All About the Little Folk: Fairies, Elves, Brownies, Boggarts, and More - **Week of 3rd February** - Morris Dancers and Mummers: Folk Dancers and Folk Actors - **Week of 10th February** - Mary Read and Anne Bonny: The Fierce Female Pirates - **Week of 17th February** - Dick Turpin, the Highwayman - **Week of 24th February** - Dick Whittington: Thrice Mayor of London, Rags to Riches, and His Famous Cat - **Week of 3rd March** - The Selkie Bride and More About the Seal People - **Week of 10th March** - Boudica, Warrior Queen of the Iceni Tribe - **Week of 17th March** - Dragons of the British Isles - **Week of 24th March** - Gwenllian, the Welsh Warrior Princess - **Week of 30th March** - Wayland the Smith, Who Flew to England

Each week we will focus on a myth, legend, folktale or custom from the British Isles. You may have heard some of them, and some of them may be new to you - either way, they are exciting and compelling. It is possible to trace some of them to historical facts, while others are more ancient and their origins are more difficult to find. In this ongoing class I will tell the story and relate it to the historical context too.

Lots of these myths and legends do contain monsters, bloodshed, violence, and sometimes romance. I want parents to be aware that these potentially sensitive themes are part of the stories I will be telling. However, I will address these themes in an age-appropriate way and although these issues may be an essential part of some of the stories, they are not the main thing I will focus on. If you have any queries or concerns about a class, please contact me in advance and I can tell you what we will be covering.
受講に必要なもの
An optional blank fact file sheet will provided for the students to fill in during or after the class. An optional blank UK map will be provided so the students can locate where the myth, legend, folktale or custom originated.

I have always been fascinated by the tales of old Britain, starting as a child when I read books on dragon and sea monster myths. I studied the tropes of these myths and legends at university as part of my English Literature degree, and still enjoy reading books like The Mabinogion (old Welsh stories), The Orkneyinga Saga (stories from one of my favourite places, Orkney) and Sir Gawain and the Green Knight (with links to the Arthurian legends). I find them compelling and exciting, and I love to pass them on to others. Folk traditions still play a large part of British culture, and I love to research them.
I aim to make the classes relaxed and enjoyable, and to pass on my own enthusiasm for the subject!
