Parts of the Eastern United States are about to be inundated with hopping, jumping, NOISY cicadas. These insects have a unique life-cycle - they spend most of their time underground only emerging every 13 or 17 years to mate, lay eggs, and die while their offspring burrow underground and start the seventeen-year cycle all over again. Kids will learn about the life-cycle, anatomy, and range of the Brood XIII 17-year cicadas and Brood XIX cicadas. We will also complete age-appropriate worksheets and a craft project in this class. Students will watch exciting videos Annette the Teacher took of the Brood V cicadas during their last appearance in 2016. We will talk about the myths and misconceptions about these mysterious visitors. (No, they do NOT burrow into your ears or bite or harm wildlife, pets, plants, or trees.) Even if you will not be in the Brood XIII or Brood XIX range, this is an excellent class for any student interested in nature, bugs, or insects! Students will have videos to watch, worksheets to complete, age-appropriate reading assignments, and a craft project. Please see the supply list for the supplies for your craft. This course includes six videos, two reading selections, five worksheets, and a craft project. Supplies for the Cicada craft: 1 Toilet Paper Tube (empty) 1 piece of color paper Tape Glue Scissors Markers, crayons, or paint to decorate your cicada Optional: 3 Pipe Cleaners

Annette is a published writer, publisher, and artist. She uses her extensive knowledge and experience to create unique classes for every student. She enjoys teaching science, history, art, and cooking classes. She brings history alive with her "Life in ..." history classes where students learn about key times in history by experiencing children and families' lives in that time period. "Paint like ..." art classes where students will learn about famous artists and create their own artwork based on the artists' works. "Smart Science" classes where we explore science and complete experiments and projects. Kid Cuisine classes are cooking classes for Young Chefs based on historic foods and science topics. Students should be prepared to make, explore, and create during class. Annette knows hands-on, interactive experiences are the best way for children to learn.
Annette spent the first nine years of her professional life working in the medical field. She worked as a Transplant Coordinator, retrieving organs for transplantation, and she worked in research. When she was five years old she got her first microscope (which she still has). She also became obsessed with the brain at the age of five. She made her own model of the brain, which she also still has to this day.
