Our irresistible Anne Shirley is 16 years old and has blossomed into a beautiful young schoolteacher! Join me in this eight week book study as we share in Anne’s trials and triumphs in “Anne of Avonlea”. Themes of the novel range from Anne’s teaching adventures in a one-room schoolhouse, to her winning over a grumpy neighbor, to many kindred spirits emerging and continuing along the way. The novel is a coming of age story, as Anne turns the page from girlhood to womanhood! I look forward to sharing my own firsthand experiences and descriptions of Prince Edward Island, Canada. I am blessed to own a 1904 farmhouse on PEI’s north shore, five minutes from Silver Bush, a frequent retreat for the author where she found her inspiration for the “Lake of Shining Waters”. Those who took my "Anne of Green Gables" Book Club will be delighted to resume our less touristy exploration of the "gentle island", visiting the real beaches, lighthouses, and old haunts of Lucy Maud Montgomery. How does that sound for using the scope of our imagination?! In addition to reading the novel "Anne of Avonlea", learners will have the opportunity during the length of the course to create their own set of "Vintage Lighthouse Scrolls" based on quotes and real lighthouses in Prince Edward Island. It will be a splendid activity indeed! Learners will read sections of the book prior to each meeting. Book Club meetings will typically follow this pattern: Review of main events(plot), favorite quotes and vocabulary, and a fun discussion. We will work on our "Vintage Lighthouse Scrolls" towards the end of every class. All meetings will include me sharing authentic PEI anecdotes, pictures, or maps so learners will really feel like they’re getting the “inside scoop”! Eight Week Schedule Outline First Week: Meeting #1: Introductions, I will explain homework and scrolls activity, discuss chapters 1-2 Second Week: Meeting #2: discuss chapters 3-6 Third Week: Meeting #3: discuss chapters 7-10, work on vintage scrolls Fourth Week: Meeting #4: discuss chapters 11-14 Fifth Week: Meeting #5: discuss chapters 15-18, work on vintage scrolls Sixth Week: Meeting #6: discuss chapters 19-22 Seventh Week: Meeting #7: discuss chapters 23-26, work on vintage scrolls Eighth Week: Meeting #8: discuss chapters 27-30, share our vintage scrolls, say our farewells!

Parents, please note that the novel "Anne of Avonlea" deals with Anne struggling whether or not to “whip” a disrespectful student and in the end feels she has no choice but to administer such discipline. In class we will discuss the difference in dealing with behavior issues now compared to the time period of the book(late 1800's), and how this mode of discipline is unacceptable in today’s society.
In addition, there are instances in the novel of subtle racist character descriptions which were more commonplace during the time frame the book was written. It will be pointed out in class that racism in any form should never be acceptable, and will provide the opportunity for a candid discussion on how we should not tolerate subtle racism. Thank you parents for working together with me to develop these essential skills in your children.
Also, please feel free to read the book aloud to learners if the vocabulary or reading level proves too challenging, in fact this is highly encouraged. Reading aloud to your child is a wonderful experience for everyone.

I am a certified teacher with over 26 years of experience in Canadian classrooms. I specialize in Middle Years English and have led hundreds of book clubs with countless fifth and sixth grade children. I have truly enjoyed every minute of it. Perhaps most telling of all, I have been enthralled with Anne Shirley my whole life...so much so, that I went to Prince Edward Island and bought a farmhouse there!!
