18 lessons//6 Weeks
Week 1Lesson 1Introduction to scienceUnderstanding key components of the scientific method, including observation, hypothesis formation, experimentation, and data analysis. Emphasizing the practical application of the scientific method through hands-on experiments.Lesson 2Basic ChemistryWe will discuss emergent properties of water, including cohesion, adhesion, solubility, and pHLesson 3Biochemistry and MacromoleculesExamining the major classes of biomolecules, such as carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids. Investigating the structure and function of these biomolecules in living organisms. Relating the role of biomolecules to energy storage, cell structure, and genetic information. How enzymes function in the cellular systemWeek 2Lesson 4Cell Structures and Cell Theory 1Introducing the concept of the cell and its role as the basic unit of life. Comparing prokaryotic and eukaryotic cell structures and discussing their significance. Highlighting the historical development of the cell theory. Delving into the various organelles within eukaryotic cells, including the nucleus, mitochondria, endoplasmic reticulum, and more. Exploring the diversity of cell types and their specific adaptations for various functions. Discussing the interplay of organelles within a cell.Lesson 5Cell Structures and Cell Theory 2Introducing the concept of the cell and its role as the basic unit of life. Discussing the interplay of organelles within a cell.Lesson 6Cell Membrane and TransportInvestigating the structure and functions of the cell membrane. Exploring key concepts of cellular transport, including diffusion, osmosis, and active transport. Connecting these processes to the regulation of cell environment and homeostasis.Week 3Lesson 7Basic concepts of energy metabolism & photosynthesisUnderstanding the process of photosynthesis and its significance in energy conversion. Investigating photosynthetic pigments, the light-dependent and light-independent reactions, and the role of chloroplasts. Discussing the interdependence of photosynthesis and respiration in ecosystems.Lesson 8Cellular Respiration pt 1.Exploring cellular respiration as the process by which cells generate ATP. Covering the stages of cellular respiration, including glycolysis, the Krebs cycle, and the electron transport chain. Relating cellular respiration to energy production and the carbon cycle.Lesson 9Cellular respiration pt 2. & cell divisionReview of cellular respiration & anaerobic respirationWeek 4Lesson 10MitosisGoal of cell division Distinguishing between mitosis and meiosis and their roles in cell division. Investigating the phases of mitosis, including prophase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase. Cancer and cell divisionLesson 11MeiosisUnderstanding the stages of meiosis and their importance in sexual reproduction.Lesson 12Basic Genetics (Mendelian Genetics)Discussing Gregor Mendel's laws and principles of inheritance. Introducing Punnett squares and their use in predicting genetic outcomes.Week 5Lesson 13Non-mendelian geneticsIncomplete, co-dominance, and multiple alleles & sex-linked genesLesson 14DNA Properties & History of DNAProperties of DNA and how DNA was discovered by different scientists (Griffth, Avery, Hersey & Chase, and Watson & Crick)Lesson 15DNA replication - ProcessEntire process of DNA replication & semi-conservative model of DNA replicationWeek 6Lesson 16RNA transcription & Translation & MutationsLesson 17BiotechnologyWe will carefully examine how genetic technologies are currently used in biotechnology (gene manipulation & molecular cloning)Lesson 18MicrobiomeDefinition of microbiomes and their impacts in human systems
- The students will be able to learn diverse topics that are typically covered in the first semester of high school biology curriculum.
I have received a bachelor's degree in microbiology (2014) and a PhD degree in molecular immunology (2021). I also worked at Yale University as a postdoctoral associate for a year (2022). I have also served as a teaching assistant and lecturer in introductory biology and advanced biochemistry lecture. I have also tutored high school and AP biology for 10 years.
授業以外に週あたり 1 - 2 時間の学習が期待されます
Homework
頻度: 1-2 per weekフィードバック: 必要に応じて詳細: Homework will be assigned weekly, consisting of a variety of question types, including multiple-choice questions, short answers, essays, and problem-solving exercises. The assignments will be posted every Friday, and students will have the weekend to complete them. Grading will be available upon request, ensuring students receive timely feedback and support for their learning progress.Letter Grade
頻度: 1 after class completion詳細: Homework will be given weekly and I will grade it with constructive feedback.グレーディング
頻度: 含まれる詳細: The grades will be given after discussing with the parents.
Occasionally, powerpoint slides will be used but students will not need to have an access to PowerPoint slides - the teacher will provide them. I will write notes with the students.
