Welcome to my AP biology class! This course begins with a consideration of the living condition and discussion of the unique properties of living organisms that set life apart from the non-living. It continues with molecular and cellular biology, from which it moves logically into reproduction and genetics.

This course is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the principles and concepts of biology at an advanced level. It is specifically tailored to prepare students for the AP Biology exam. While this course does not include a laboratory component, it focuses on the theoretical aspects of biology and aims to develop critical thinking, analytical, and problem-solving skills.

Course Objectives:
By the end of this course, students will:
* Develop a deep understanding of the major concepts and themes in biology.
* Acquire knowledge of the structure and function of biological molecules, cells, and organisms.
* Understand the mechanisms of inheritance, evolution, and ecology.
* Develop scientific inquiry skills through analysis and interpretation of biological data.
* Cultivate effective communication skills through scientific writing and oral presentations.
* Prepare for the AP Biology exam by practicing with past exam questions and mock tests.

Please note that this class is AP biology class: The student/learner is expected to take notes during the class and optional homework will be given. I will grade homework every week and provide the feedback accordingly.

Week 1: Basic Chemistry, Water Chemistry/Macromolecules
During the first week, we will delve into the characteristics of water and explore the composition and attributes of macromolecules, including carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids.

Week 2: Cell Structures/Membrane
In the second week, we will conduct a comparative analysis of cellular structures found in prokaryotes and eukaryotes, encompassing both animal and plant cells. Additionally, we will delve into the fundamental properties of various cytoskeleton components, such as microfilaments, microtubules, and intermediate microfilaments. Further, we will delve into the properties of cellular membranes and their role in regulating the transport of diverse substances.

Week 3: Cellular Respiration/Photosynthesis
During this week, we will explore the molecular pathways involved in cellular respiration, including both aerobic and anaerobic processes, as well as the intricate mechanisms of photosynthesis. We will also investigate how cells respond to environmental changes and the molecular diversity underlying these processes.

Week 4: Mitosis/Meiosis/Cancer
Week 4 will involve a detailed examination of mitosis and meiosis, highlighting the distinctions between these critical cell division processes. Additionally, we will discuss instances of aberrant mitosis and meiosis, particularly their implications in the context of cancer.

Week 5: Review/Midterm Exam
In the fifth week, we will conduct a comprehensive review of all the material covered up to this point, ensuring that students have a solid grasp of the concepts. Subsequently, students will take the mid-term exam to assess their understanding.

Week 6: Cell Communication/Introduction to Genetics
During this week, we will explore the intricacies of cell communication, including the underlying mechanisms and their regulatory processes. Furthermore, we will introduce key terms in both Mendelian and modern genetics.

Week 7: Mendelian/Non-Mendelian Genetics/Problem Solving
Week 7 will be dedicated to practical problem-solving in genetics, where we will cover Mendelian and non-Mendelian genetic principles, equipping students with the skills to tackle genetics-related challenges.

Week 8: Molecular Genetics: DNA Replication, Transcription, and Translation
This week, we will delve into the central dogma of biology, discussing the molecular processes involved in DNA replication, transcription, and translation, providing insights into how genetic information is managed at the molecular level.

Week 9: Gene Regulation/Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology
We will explore the regulation of genes in both prokaryotes and eukaryotes, emphasizing the mechanisms that control gene expression. Additionally, we will discuss the manipulation of genes and their applications in biotechnology.

Week 10: Evolution (Microevolution vs. Macroevolution)
Week 10 will be dedicated to the study of evolution, where we will differentiate between microevolution and macroevolution, examining the processes by which living organisms have diversified over Earth's history.

Week 11: Ecology (Take-Home Final Exam)
In this week, we will delve into the intricate field of ecology, discussing the relationships between living organisms and their environments, and addressing relevant ecological terminology. Additionally, students will receive a take-home final exam to assess their understanding.

Week 12: Review/Final Exam
The final week will encompass a comprehensive review of all course materials to ensure a thorough understanding of the subject matter. Students will then take the final exam, assessing their knowledge and proficiency in the course.

Please note that the learner cannot transfer to the new session after 1 week of the class. Again, welcome to my AP biology class!
