WHAT TO EXPECT:
How to Draw Basics Studio courses are designed to minimize lecture time and maximize on in-class drawing and practice time. As such, How to Draw Basics Studio courses are a fantastic way to learn through experience, with tons of teacher-guided exercises and independent in-class assignments that encourage learners to think and learn about drawing at their pace. Additionally, How to Draw Basics Studio courses incorporate class critique sessions which will teach learners how to give and take a critique, allowing them to engage in positive dialogue with their classmates and myself. 

Through this, your learner will learn observational skills, contours, principles of values, composition, the importance of critique, and more. They should come away with a large variety of easily repeatable exercises to practice, numerous practice sketches, and a final five to ten object still life drawing with a fabric competent. Learners will be encouraged to work with both graphite and charcoal mediums. To remove the stress of what is sometimes a very daunting course of study, your learners will not have tests, quizzes, or formal grades in the class. Instead, I utilize positive verbal critiques to provide feedback and encourage improvement.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE:
It is recommended that learners come in familiar with basic drawing skills and vocabulary. Be sure to ask your learner if they know what the grades on their pencils mean, what values are, and if they know what a contour is. If they cannot answer these questions, I recommend checking out my course How to Draw Basics: Still Life Drawing first. How to Draw Basics 111: Contained Contours: Our first lesson will begin with introductions, a brief explanation of course expectations, and a review of necessary materials and vocabulary needed to excel in this class. Learners will work on two guided exercises: blind-contour drawing and a drawing of a crumpled piece of paper. Finally, they will begin their first in-class drawing assignment, a contour drawing of the inside of cabinetry. After this class, learners should understand contour drawing and begin mastering their observational skills, such as concentration, being able to eye-ball proportion, and so on. Additionally, learners will have firm expectations for the class, familiarity with materials, and have repeatable exercises to practice outside of class. 

How to Draw Basics 112: Dastardly Drapes: The second lesson will begin with an introduction to critiques using the provided Critique Guide. Learners will practice critique by looking at the in-class cabinetry assignment from last week. Then, learners will move on to two guided exercises: value studies and texture cubes. Finally, learners will be asked to draw drapery or fabric that is hung in some fashion. After this class, learners should understand values and textures, why they are important and how to do them. Your learner should be continuing to hone their observational skills. In addition, they will have learned how to do a constructive critique. 

How to Draw Basics 113: Composition Constructions: We will begin with another class critique, this time of the drapery assignment from the previous week. This class, instead of guided exercises, I will present a brief PowerPoint lecture that outlines important vocabulary and techniques associated with composition such as open v. closed composition, and more. After, learners will jump right into their in-class drawing assignment of six composition sketches. After this class, learners should understand principles of composition and how to create successful composition sketches. They should, as always, be continuing to hone their observational skills through the class and be better practiced with critiques. 

How to Draw Basics 114: Themed Still Life with Fabric Component: Our fourth lesson will be entirely dedicated to the completion of your learners final in-class assignment, the still life with a fabric component. Still lives are one of the most important works in an artist’s portfolio because they promote naturalistic thinking, the ability to represent a variety of objects, the ability to maintain consistent proportion, and the ability to capture a variety of textures. By this point, your learner has completed all the steps necessary to feel comfortable assembling and drawing a still life. This class is intended to promote individual and creative thinking skills in addition to being a culmination of all that your learner has learned so far. Your learners will be asked to compose a still life with five to ten objects and a fabric component under a theme. 

How to Draw Basics 115: Still Life Studio Critique: The final lesson in the class will be dedicated to a final critique. We will begin by reviewing our Critique Guide once more. Then, each learner who wishes to participate will share their still life and composition sketches, give an artists statement, and receive critiques from each of their classmates. The goal of the final critique is to allow learners to practice utilizing the vocabulary they have been working with over the duration of the course, master giving and receiving criticism, and be able to respond and engage with each others works
