Welcome to Foundations in Literature for 4th to 6th grades! This is a very lively class that will discuss lots of devices in literature and also genres included in literature. The class will meet twice a week. This is the list of books we will be reading this year: 1. The City of Ember 2. Love That Dog 3. Esperanza Rising 4. Phantom Tollbooth 5. Iceberg 6. Rabbit Hill 7. Tuesdays at the Castle We will also be listening to "Peter and the Wolf" and also reading some fairy tales. Here are some summaries about these books: City of Ember- The City of Ember is a post-apocalyptic novel by Jeanne DuPrau that was published in 2003. The story is about Ember, a post-apocalyptic underground city threatened by aging infrastructure and corruption. The young protagonists, Lina Mayfleet and Doon Harrow, follow clues left behind by the original builders of the City of Ember, to safety in the outside world. Love That Dog- Published in 2001, the book combines comedy and tragedy in detailing young Jack’s journey to loving poetry—a journey that takes form via free verse journal entries. Though Jack initially scoffs at the idea of writing poems, he later learns the value of his own voice. Esperanza Rising- Esperanza Rising is a young adult historical fiction novel written by Mexican-American author Pam Muñoz Ryan. The novel focuses on Esperanza, the only daughter of wealthy Mexican parents, and follows the events that occur after her father's murder. Esperanza, her mother, and their former household servants flee to California with no money during the Great Depression, where they find low-paying agricultural work. Phantom Tollbooth- The Phantom Tollbooth follows the story of a young boy named Milo who embarks on an adventurous journey to restore the Kingdom of Wisdom. Along the way, he encounters quirky characters and learns valuable lessons about the importance of curiosity and imagination. Iceberg- Iceberg (2023) is a historical fiction middle grade novel written by Jennifer A. Nielsen. She is the author of 20 novels, which range from historical fiction to fantasy. She has won multiple awards for her work, and her historical fiction works provide approachable access points to events that shaped the US and the world. Iceberg takes place in April 1912 and tells the story of the Titanic’s first voyage and tragic sinking through the lens of fictional protagonist Hazel, a 12-year-old stowaway who survives the disaster. The story’s themes center on truth, questions, friendship, class divisions, sacrifice, and hope. Rabbit Hill- The story takes place in the countryside near Westport, Connecticut. The animal inhabitants are suffering as the house nearby has been abandoned for several years and the untended garden, the animals' source of food, has withered to nothing. "New Folks" then move into the house: Are they hunters, or friendly gardeners who will provide for the animals? Tuesdays at the Castle- "Tuesdays at the Castle" by Jessica Day George is a captivating fantasy novel filled with adventure, magic, and mystery. The story revolves around a magical castle that undergoes a transformation every Tuesday, and the royal family's struggle to protect their kingdom from external threats. Filled with intrigue and suspense, the book takes readers on a thrilling journey through the enchanting world of Castle Glower.
