Go along with Enola Holmes to solve mysteries and evade her brothers, Sherlock and Mycroft! In this book club you will read the Enola Holmes Mysteries and meet once a week to talk about the characters and twists and turns of each mystery. I'll ask questions related to character, plot, and theme to guide the conversation, but the discussion is largely student-led. This class aims to foster students' love of books by encouraging them to have meaningful conversations with their peers about books in a fun and respectful setting. **PLEASE MAKE SURE THESE BOOKS ARE APPROPRIATE FOR YOUR LEARNER BOTH IN TERMS OF CONTENT AND READING LEVEL/ HAVING TIME TO READ** The books are set in Victorian England and show both good and bad elements of that era. A good place to start is by checking the review of the first book on commonsensemedia.org (More information in the parental guidance section.) Common Sense media review for the first book: https://www.commonsensemedia.org/book-reviews/enola-holmes-the-case-of-the-missing-marquess-the-enola-holmes-mysteries-book-1 (If you don't see a meeting time that works for you, please fill out a class request; I'll do my best to accommodate you. Classes that meet on Thursday meet every other week.) Class structure: First 5 minutes: Community building chat (Might be longer on the first meeting to allow for introductions.) Discussion: approximately 20 minutes- Students will guide the discussion. I will ask questions to deepen their thinking about character, theme and plot. Students may ask questions that they have about the books. (I'll give the other students a chance to answer those questions before chiming in.) Students will make predictions about the next book. Vocabulary and references that will be important in the next book: 10 minutes (In the final class, this time will be used to wrap up the course and socialize.) Goodbyes and homework reminders: 5 minutes *We'll talk about the characters, mystery, plots, and themes of the books. If everyone has also seen the movies, we'll discuss differences and similarities between the books and films. If students are waiting to watch the movies after they've read the books, we will leave the movie out of class discussions. Course Schedule: *Students should read the entirety of each book before the class meeting for that book. Please bring your book to class. Week 1: "Enola Holmes: The Case of the Missing Marquess" Week 2: "The Case of the Left-Handed Lady: An Enola Holmes Mystery" Week 3: "The Case of the Bizarre Bouquets: An Enola Holmes Mystery" Week 4: "The Case of the Peculiar Pink Fan: An Enola Holmes Mystery" Week 5- "The Case of the Criptic Crinoline: An Enola Holmes Mystery" Week 6- "The Case of the Gypsy Goodbye: An Enola Holmes Mystery"

These books feature the good and bad elements of Victorian England some examples include:
*Enola and other characters are placed in mortal danger several times.
*Prostitutes and ladies of the night are mentioned, but not defined.
*Criminal activities ranging from questionable ingredients in street food to attempted murder.
These books are published for and considered by the publisher to be appropriate for children of this age group, but please research these books to make sure they are appropriate for your child. (Common sense media is a good place to start. Here is that site's review of the first book: https://www.commonsensemedia.org/book-reviews/enola-holmes-the-case-of-the-missing-marquess-the-enola-holmes-mysteries-book-1 )
Please read the first few pages and have your student do so as well to see if the books are a good fit for their reading level. You can find sample pages on Amazon.
**The Netflix film is based on the first book, but does not follow it closely, so the appropriateness of the film does not necessarily mean that the books are right for your learner.**
This class requires students to read a whole book each week, please make sure that they will have time to complete the reading so they can participate fully and won't have spoilers during class. The books look short, but they are dense, so please read a sample to see if the books are a good fit for your learner.
Your student needs to have access to the books during class.
If you have questions, please contact me.

I believe that children are the world's best learners! When they are motivated by a genuine interest in something, they are super focused and there is no stopping them. My classes are student centered and, therefore, build on each student's background knowledge, strengths, and needs. My goal is to always create a learning environment where students feel comfortable expressing themselves and can practice taking risks in a safe environment.
In 2007 I earned a Master of Arts degree in teaching and highly qualified teacher status in my home state where I am licensed to teach kindergarten through sixth grade. Since finishing my degree I have taught all grades K-6 in various capacities. I have taught all subjects and particularly love guiding children as they deepen their appreciation for books. For the past six years I have worked as a math specialist, teaching both grade level math classes and math intervention.
When I'm not teaching I love to travel, spend time with my family, read, write, swim, and cuddle with my adorable cat, Jake. Every November I participate in National Novel Writing Month, the goal of which is to write an entire 50,000 novel from scratch by the end of the month. In my six years of participation I have met that goal twice! Whether I write 50,000 words or not, it's a great way to relieve stress and stay motivated to write.
