You're invited to a Halloween Party! Come in costume or in regular clothes. We'll freeze dance using moves that match your costume and the costumes of your classmates, decorate pumpkins, and play Halloween themed Would You Rather. INTRODUCTIONS (5 minutes) We'll start the party by introducing ourselves and telling what our costumes are. (If you're wearing regular clothes, you can tell us what your costume is going to be. I will introduce you if you're feeling shy.) Masks are welcome. However, masks should be removed for identification during the first five minutes or so of class to meet safety and privacy policies. Masks can impede vision, so students will be required to remove them during the dancing and would you rather portions of the class. School appropriate costumes only. Everyone has a different idea of what scary is and this class has a large age range, so no super scary or super gross costumes please. Contact me if you're unsure whether your costume is suitable. The educator will vet costumes to ensure they meet Outschool standards (secular, age-appropriate, etc.). DANCE! (About 5 minutes) Make sure you have some clear space to Freeze Dance to kid friendly Halloweenish music. I'll call out the costume someone is wearing and we'll all dance with moves that match the costume until the music stops and we all have to freeze. When the music starts again I'll give another costume or say freestyle or dance as your costume. This is a no elimination version of Freeze Dance, everyone gets to keep dancing :) I will ask students to stay within the boundaries of their cameras, but parental guidance before class on where they can dance is suggested. HALLOWEEN WOULD YOU RATHER? (About 7 minutes) In this game, players are expected to choose between two options like would you rather go trick-or-treating on Halloween or go to a Halloween Party? The questions can be goofy, straight forward, or a difficult choice between two good options or two unfavorable options. Students will respond by moving a certain way--like wave your arms for one choice and pat your head for the other-- rather than telling their choice. Students often like to make up their own questions for this game.) PUMPKINS (About 7 minutes) Now that we've gotten out some wiggles and giggles, it's time for pumpkin decorating! Bring a pumpkin to decorate, or more than one if you're fast. Pumpkins of all kinds are welcome- fresh, paper, foam, plastic, whatever pumpkin you have on hand. Before class make sure to have everything you'll need to decorate your pumpkin ready and conveniently located in your class space. You might want to bring some paper and something to draw with or something to color in case you finish early. Please NO CARVING during class.

All costumes should be school appropriate, not very scary or too gross. The age range for this class is 5-10 years old, so choose a costume that students in that range would likely be comfortable with. If you have questions about whether the costume you have in mind is appropriate, please contact me.
The educator will vet costumes to ensure they meet Outschool standards (secular, age-appropriate, etc.).
Masks must not be worn while dancing or playing 'Would You Rather' as they can impede vision causing a safety hazard.
Make sure your student has room to dance and knows where their boundaries are for dancing.
We only have 7 minutes for pumpkin decorating, so students may or may not finish that activity during the class. PLEASE, NO CARVING during class.

I believe that children are the world's best learners! When they are motivated by a genuine interest in something, they are super focused and there is no stopping them. My classes are student centered and, therefore, build on each student's background knowledge, strengths, and needs. My goal is to always create a learning environment where students feel comfortable expressing themselves and can practice taking risks in a safe environment.
In 2007 I earned a Master of Arts degree in teaching and highly qualified teacher status in my home state where I am licensed to teach kindergarten through sixth grade. Since finishing my degree I have taught all grades K-6 in various capacities. I have taught all subjects and particularly love guiding children as they deepen their appreciation for books. For the past six years I have worked as a math specialist, teaching both grade level math classes and math intervention.
When I'm not teaching I love to travel, spend time with my family, read, write, swim, and cuddle with my adorable cat, Jake. Every November I participate in National Novel Writing Month, the goal of which is to write an entire 50,000 novel from scratch by the end of the month. In my six years of participation I have met that goal twice! Whether I write 50,000 words or not, it's a great way to relieve stress and stay motivated to write.
