Crochet Project Based Learning- Turtle - A Beginner Friendly Flex Class

This is a flex class
-Each week class assignments will be sent out for the student to complete on their own time.
-There are assignment due dates and deadlines
-There is not set date and time that you need to attend
-There are no live classes, however, there will be plenty of interactions and encouragement between the students and each other and myself. 
- Crochet works best in a flex class environment as students all progress at different paces and this removes the frustration of comparison, while still providing lots of ability to learn and progress.

Beginner Level 1- Knows chain stitch and Single Crochet and can create a multi row item such as a scarf, washrag, or blanket.
Beginner Level 2- Level 1 and has completed at least 3 projects but looking to learn new stitches and techniques.

Excited to crochet now that you have learned to do the basic single crochet? If you have taken crochet and know the basics of holding your yarn, creating a chain and the basic single crochet, and are interested learning more, this class is your next step! During this 5-week course, students will create an adorable turtle and have the skills to create a whole family of them.

Lessons will go over the basics for any students that are rusty or brand new. Students should be familiar with the single crochet stitch and foundation chain. If you are looking for a complete crochet beginner course, please check out my Crochet Intensive Course. 

Crochet skills that will be covered include: 
- Choosing the correct yarn and hook for the project 
- A review of the slip knot, foundation chain, and single crochet 
- An introduction to working in the round
- Reading and following a PDF printable crochet pattern 
- Finishing off your work 
- Decrease stitches 
- Learn the double crochet stitch 
- Hand-sewing basics 
- Sewing in the ends to ensure a long lasting project and invisible seam 

Week 1: You will begin to create the shell of your turtle.
Week 2: You will finish the shell of your turtle.
Week 3: You will create the head of your turtle.
Week 4: You will create the legs of your turtle.
Week 5: You will learn to assemble and hand stitch your turtle together. 

This class will be taught by video tutorial each week. I will send out a copy of the PDF pattern week one. Students can choose to work from the file or a printed copy. Students will need to upload a photo of their work each week to encourage each other as well as to ensure they are on the right track with what they are working on. It is helpful for students who may be newer to be encouraged by those that have got the hang of it. Throughout each week, students will use the classroom to correspond with one another as well as myself about project, and pattern questions and to discuss any other issues pertaining to the projects.

Each week a new virtual  scavenger hunt challenge or video response question will be posted within the theme of the week. Students are asked to upload either a photo or a video of their weekly work to the classroom and give at least one student crituqe each week. Gaining inspiration from each other I suspect each week they'll take their creativity up a notch.

Crochet is hard and usually frustrating in the beginning. I empathize with students and help them make light of it, often telling them frustration means they are doing it right or if you feel like you need to have 8 arms like an octopus you’re on the right track. Learning new things take time and practice. I encourage students to get through the difficult part and find the joy in fiber arts. I have had many students tell me thank you for not letting them give up, often these are the students who have stuck with the craft to the advanced levels. 

Since this is a flex class, there are no scheduled live meetings; however, I am available to answer questions any time during the 5 weeks of class. I will also share the tips and tricks I have learned over the last decade of teaching kids to crochet. Suggestions and encouragement are always provided, I love to see my students successful and can say I’ve never had a child give up and not learn. 

It is my goal for each student to complete my crochet classes with the skills and excitement to further their skills.

Supply List: 
•	Crochet hook size G (4mm) though gage is not important so a size up or down will work too
•	Worsted Weight Yarn -One full skein or a few partial 
•	Stitch markers (safety pins or bobbypins work)
•	Set of Safety eyes 6-10 mm (will not need these until week 3) Can embroider if preferred
•	Large eyed needle, I prefer metal and the slanted tips for ease of sewing parts together.
•	Fiberfill Stuffing
•	Scissors
