このクラスで学べること

In this class students will learn to make a woven reed basket.

Students will be instructed in all the steps of basic basket weaving, while watching me make a small basket from start to finish. We'll talk about various kinds of baskets and their uses, materials used to weave baskets, and the care of finished baskets.

Students are encouraged to purchase their own supplies and weave along, but it's ok to just join in and watch the process, too!

This will be a casual, conversational class where students can ask questions and share ideas.

Every student's basket will be seen as a unique, beautiful, and successful work of practical art.

Students don't need any prior experience, but some dexterity and fine motor skills (or assistance) are needed.

受講に必要なもの
Students who wish to make their own basket during class time should purchase the following in advance:

https://basketweaving.com/shopsite_sc/store/html/cherokee_double_wall_basket.html
(enough for ONE basket, but please note that we will NOT be following the inclosed instructions!)

OR

https://basketweaving.com/shopsite_sc/store/html/2-round-reed.html
(for the enthusiastic student this will provide enough material for several baskets)

*I am not affiliated with this company, but do use and reccomend their products.

This company also sells kits through Amazon:
Cherokee Double Wall Basket Kit https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B01GXQ4JDI/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_F3HEABBQWNAZVW6SANA8

PLEASE NOTE: Shipping times vary, and I try to list this class with plenty of time for folks to sign up, place an order for material, and have it arrive in time... but I cannot be responsible for your supplies not arriving in time for class. Students without supplies are still very welcome to attend class and watch as I show the steps needed - but I cannot provide refunds if supplies aren't in hand.

ADDITIONAL ITEMS NEEDED:
1 wash basin, sink, bucket, or plastic tote filled with water to soak reed in
A towel to dry your hands on
Sturdy craft scissors for cutting reed
2-6 clothespins
A ruler, tape measure, or some other item to measure up to 12"

DAY OF CLASS:
Please make sure to put your reed in a basin of water at least 30 minutes before the start of class so it has time to soften and become flexible! The basin should be something you can have near-ish to where you'll be working during class, so the reed can remain in the water when you aren't weaving with it.

I grew up homeschooling in the woods of Maine and along the coastal shores of a small New Jersey island town.

I spent my summers at Girl Scout camp and traveling across the country on scouting adventures primarily focused on the outdoors and history - like a wagon train traversing the North Dakota prairie and hiking & camping along fur trade routes in Wisconsin. As a GS Gold Award recipient, my final project was implementing an outdoor day camp program for Special Olympians because I have always believed that outdoor learning and fun should be accessible to everyone.

I went on to study Theology at a small private college and then spent time living in Far East Russia - where I ran camp programs for children in rural villages, youth centers, and inner-city parks.

I have nearly 20 years of experience working in living history museums, where I've demonstrated and taught period crafts and domestic arts, run educational programs and special events, researched and created staff costuming, and was the camp director for one of the few railroad themed summer camps in the USA.

I homeschooled my children from kindergarten through graduation. I've also owned a Montessori school, helped facilitate two Sudbury-inspired learning cooperatives, and founded two inclusive homeschool support groups that offered guidance for parents and a full range of weekly classes for students of all ages.

I'm a master-level Forest Kindergarten teacher and happily at home outside, sharing my love of nature with kids - no matter what the weather!

I am currently finishing a BFA with a concentration in Socially Engaged Art at Prescott College.

In my "spare time,” I'm a writer, musician, and all-around creative and hobbity sort of person.

I have many years of experience working to create spaces that are safe and inclusive for LGBTQ+ and neurodiverse young people. I enjoy helping all my students learn, share their interests, and practice group social skills. It's always my endeavor to foster a classroom space where everyone can share, be heard, and participate in the most comfortable and enjoyable way for them. I believe in facilitating spaces of kindness, patience, and gentle correction when needed. If you have any concerns about how your child might best be included in and enjoy any of my classes, please don't hesitate to contact me!
