Join us as we spend the holiday season with Charles Dickens! We’ll enjoy reading and discussing A Christmas Carol, his Who Was biography, play games, have fun, and conclude with a discussion of our favorite versions of the movie! A Christmas Carol recounts the story of Ebenezer Scrooge, an angry, stingy old miser who is visited by the ghost of his former business partner Jacob Marley and the spirits of Christmas Past, Christmas Present, and Christmas Yet to Come. After their visits, Scrooge is transformed into the kindest, gentlest, most generous of men! WEEK ONE! We will begin by reading A Christmas Carol, by Charles Dickens, which students are required to read BEFORE the first class. During class time, we will discuss the historical time period, as well as explore what Christmas was like before the writing of Dickens’ book. We will also spend some time discussing the various characters, setting, plot progression , etc. Students will have plenty of time to share their thoughts, ideas, and impressions of this classic story. I will have questions and discussion prompts ready each week, should conversation lag. After our discussion time, we will end with a game if time permits! My book clubs are typically highly engaging, highly interactive, very lively! WEEK TWO! We will discuss the short biography Who Was Charles Dickens? by the official Who Was HQ, which students are required to read BEFORE our second class! During discussion time, we will discuss the life of Charles Dickens, as well as his writings, ultimately tying the story and his biography together. Again, during class time, full participation in class discussion is expected. There is grace for a shy student, of course, but students will be encouraged to dive into the discussion as they acclimate to the group. We will end with a game if time permits! WEEK THREE! We will meet to discuss the movie version we each watched of A Christmas Carol! There are 135 versions to choose from, so take your pick! Watch your family’s favorite version, or different versions for the different ages of children in your family, or choose a new one your family hasn’t watched! When we meet, we will each share our thoughts and opinions about the movies, and make recommendations based on our experiences! HOMEWORK: Week One - Read A Christmas Carol BEFORE class! Week Two - Read Who Was Charles Dickens? BEFORE class! Week Three - Watch at least one A Christmas Carol movie as a family!

I HIGHLY recommend parents preview the books and movies beforehand or alongside of their student. Only you know if this series is appropriate for your child!
受講に必要なもの
Students will need … 1. a copy of A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens, any unabridged version. 2. a copy of Who Was Charles Dickens? by Who Was HQ, and 3. any version of A Christmas Carol that you choose! Some of our favorites are A Muppets’ Christmas Carol, the George C. Scott version, the Patrick Stewart version, and for little siblings, the Mickey’s Christmas Carol! The books must be read or listened to BEFORE class. Students can use their own books, library books, ebooks, or even listen to the audio books. If listening to the audiobooks, it is highly recommended that student reads independently to develop their own reading comprehension and competency.

Ms. Carol has been a voracious reader since childhood. Her lifelong passion is to cultivate curiosity in children, and to inspire a lifelong love of learning, especially the reading and enjoyment of beautiful literature!
It is not my style to glorify the scary or darker aspects of any story. I prefer to focus on, and to keep our class discussions focused on the positive life lessons. We do, however, briefly and tactfully touch on the darker topics, such as deaths of characters, and the struggle to overcome evil, as well. I make every attempt to model and teach critical thinking, regardless of what book we are reading.
Ms. Carol has a PhD in pedagogy and history, with a Master’s in Cultural Studies. One of my core values is to teach children to think critically, and to apply that to everything they read. Racism or racial stereotypes is never acceptable to me, even in a fictional, magical world.
