My Louisiana Sky is a historical realistic fiction multi-themed novel by Kimberly Willis Holt based in the 1950s at a time of segregation in a fast-changing world. This novel offers a wonderful example of an author blending actual events and people from history with a plot that includes the importance of family, treatment of others and bullying, true friendship, acceptance of loss, and so much more. The lessons are primarily done through lively and deep discussion and question/ answer periods in which students build off each other providing details from the novel to support ideas. Over the two week, two session, time of reading the book, students will complete reading assignments as indicated in the homework section of this class listing. The following skills will occur during each meeting time and are blended together in discussion using the book to search out details, facts, figurative language, themes, vocabulary in context and much more. Class is organized through primarily discussion with students building off of each other and adding specific details from the novel to support ideas. We work together to locate figurative language examples and discuss their impact on the novel as with supporting comprehension details and vocabulary in context. Learners and the teacher bring real life examples and connect the elements of the book to their own lives. Class is stimulating, exciting, funny, relaxed and always supportive of each other and of the learning goals. All of the items listed below are blended together in every class, rather than separated out as solitary skills one at a time, forming a class where students delve into the plot, author's technique, character decisions , themes and more with higher level thinking. The following skills will be a part of each class. *vocabulary building and vocabulary in context, *figurative language, (similes, metaphors, personification, irony, foreshadowing, cliffhangers, ...) these items will be located during the reading of chapters and discussed for their meaning and author's technique in terms of how the specific figurative language adds to the writing style. *comprehension skills, including how multiple plots are woven together to create a detailed and descriptive realistic novel will be discussed throughout the progression of sessions as will questions and answer periods regarding all aspects of plot development, characters, setting events and themes from the chapters read for the class. *Students will strengthen active-reading skills including locating examples of themes, descriptive facts that support comprehension answers, character motives, mood, realistic details and events including those based from actual historical moments and people, and the building of well detailed settings which add credibility to the plot. Finally the location of resolutions in class number for is a highly important part of the process. * Each learner will reflect on the experiences of the events from history, choices made by characters, character development and realistic elements to connect to his or her own thoughts and experiences in order to share opinions and ideas and discuss literary elements of plots, turning points, settings, character development, conflicts and form connections to characters and plot outcomes

As this book takes place in Louisiana in the 1950s and is a realisitic fiction novel, content of diversity, prejudice, segregation is presented in a very age-appropriate manner . These elements occur in the novel in a way that allows for outstanding discussion and, a perfect opportunity to impact learners with information as the characters experience it.
A main portion of the plot is the main character having learning disabled parents, which impacted the way they were treated and sometimes bullied by others. The author weaves a story of compassion and care where the daughter learns how smart and capable her parents are and bullies are dealt with in a way that will positively impact the learners. These topics are dealt with compassion, empathy, and lessons learned throughout the novel.

There is nothing more exciting than when you see a student think deeply, question ideas, share a new thought, or explore character’s actions/ decisions or a quote or a purpose the author had when writing a novel and then connect the information to learner’s own story in life. Helping students reach their full potential, and beyond, in a setting that is safe, exciting, creative and funny is what teaching is all about to me. The climate has to be one that is free from bullying, pressure, and negative interactions and, instead, is one that students can’t wait to get to as they know the time in that class will be rewarding, creative, stimulating, and allow them to be who they really are and share what they want to share. There is nothing more exciting, as a teacher, then when that light bulb illuminates and a student feels confident to share and take an idea, quote, author’s purpose or decision from a book and see how it can affect real life or when a learner sees their full potential, in the written word they create.
We can make literature, come alive in a really fun, fast-paced active discussion filled atmosphere.
My background professionally is having taught third grade, fifth grade, and Sixth grade language arts for 33 years with a background in psychology, elementary education, school administration and an extensive background in overnight camping. My favorite teaching topics include writing poetry, creative and nonfiction writing, and reading/sharing outstanding literature with discussions that bring critical thinking skills and life lessons to the students. I am excited to bring this teaching to an environment that is bully free with motivated students in a small group setting.I always look forward to reading my students work as I see such brilliance in people of this age.
I can be found in the upstate NY, most often being out on the lake in my boat from spring to fall (I love being on water!), playing guitar and singing, collecting Pez, reading , cooking and baking, volunteering in the community as often as I can to make things better for others, and spending lots of time with Derby, the wonder dog, my amazingly bright and talented rescue dog who undoubtably will make visits into the virtual classroom. I also enjoy bike riding, yoga, and meditation. Most importantly, I place great emphasis on finding ways, small and big ways, that will allow my students and myself to make our mark in this world and make it a better place for others. The small ways are most often the best ways and I believe students are brilliant people who can absolutely change the world.
