Hello learners and parents! I look forward to meeting you and working with your learner to help them achieve their fiddling dreams! I teach a variety of fiddle styles, including but not limited to bluegrass, old-time, Celtic (Irish, Scottish, Cape Breton), and Texas Contest Style. All levels accepted. I will teach in standard notation unless learning by ear is specifically requested. (I prefer not to teach by tablature/fret numbers, as it is not a good method for learning to play music. I can accommodate someone who has already started on tab, but would strongly encourage them to begin to transition to learning to read music or learning to play by ear using correct note names). For learners who prefer to learn by ear I can make slow-paced recordings of the tunes they wish to learn for them to work with between class sessions. In the first lesson I will ask learners to play some tunes they already know (unless they are absolute beginners) so I can start to develop a sense of where they are and what I need to provide to help them move forward. I will ask them to tell me about their musical interests (listening to quality music is as important as practicing it!) and what goals they have for their music. I can use method books if that is requested, but usually prefer to tailor to individual interests and needs. I encourage my learners to be listening to fiddle music and will provide lists of musicians, albums and tunes for them to look up. I also welcome them to make lists for me of tunes they want to learn so I can incorporate them into their upcoming lessons. I’m passionate about keeping my learners excited about music and helping them move to the next level and reach their musical goals!

Hello parents and learners!

I grew up on a farm in Tennessee (USA) and in addition to music I also love raising rabbits, gardening, and reading! I and my husband currently live with our five beautiful children in the state of North Carolina. I am excited to be part of the Outschool family!
Music has always been a big part of my life, starting with classical piano, which I began at age 8, taking private lessons from a professor at the University of Tennessee. Later on, in my teens, my interests shifted to strings and traditional Appalachian and Celtic music. I learned from many people, including bluegrass musician Justin Moses and as a student of Jim Wood at the Jim and Inge Wood School of Music. As a young adult, I worked as a volunteer interpreter at Cade’s Cove, Great Smoky Mountains National Park, teaching park visitors about Appalachian music. I have played professionally for weddings and other events, in restaurant house bands, as well as at the Museum of Appalachia in Norris, TN. I have led traditional music demonstrations for public school classes, in addition to teaching privately for many years.
I am passionate about introducing young people to traditional Appalachian and Celtic music and helping them perfect their skills!
I primarily teach fiddle/violin and Appalachian old-time and Celtic music, but also bluegrass, Western swing and Texas contest-style fiddle. I also play guitar, both standard and Celtic (DADGAD), piano, mandolin, recorder, penny whistle, mountain dulcimer, ukulele and Irish bouzouki.
I see each learner as a unique individual and cater my teaching approach to best suit their needs and interests.
