Hello learners and grownups! In this class we’ll be learning to play some traditional Irish and Scottish folk songs on the ukulele as well as learning some of the history and background behind each one! We will mostly be focusing on learning the chords but may also include learning melody on some of the tunes, if time allows. This class is suitable for learners at an experienced-beginner through advanced level. If your learner has completed my beginner ukulele classes (https://outschool.com/classes/ukulele-basics-for-beginners-i-pqlLFFSV?usid=0UuhWEjL&signup=true&utm_campaign=share_activity_link) and (https://outschool.com/classes/ukulele-basics-for-beginners-ii-g1iH2w3y?usid=0UuhWEjL&signup=true&utm_campaign=share_activity_link) they will be ready for this class. The class outline is: Week one: Wild Mountain Thyme Week two: Star of the County Down Week three: Skye Boat Song Chord diagrams and charts as well as lyrics and sheet music for each song will be provided. The material for each class will be posted in the classroom a week before so learners will have time to review and begin working on them as they choose. YouTube videos and/or recordings of each song will also be provided. We will also include bonus songs as time allows, such as “The Bonnie Lass O’Fyvie,” “Wild Rover,” and “Whiskey in the Jar.” I look forward to meeting your learner in class!

Hello parents and learners!

I grew up on a farm in Tennessee (USA) and in addition to music I also love raising rabbits, pollinator gardening, and reading! I and my husband currently live with our five beautiful children in the state of North Carolina. I am excited to be part of the Outschool family!
Music has always been a big part of my life, starting with classical piano, which I began at age 8, taking private lessons from a professor at the University of Tennessee. Later on, in my teens, my interests shifted to strings and traditional Appalachian and Celtic music. I learned from many people, including bluegrass musician Justin Moses and as a student of Jim Wood at the Jim and Inge Wood School of Music. As a young adult, I worked as a volunteer interpreter at Cade’s Cove, Great Smoky Mountains National Park, teaching park visitors about Appalachian music. I have played professionally for weddings and other events, in restaurant house bands, as well as at the Museum of Appalachia in Norris, TN. I have led traditional music demonstrations for public school classes, in addition to teaching privately for many years.
I am passionate about introducing young people to traditional Appalachian and Celtic music and helping them perfect their skills!
I primarily teach fiddle/violin and Appalachian old-time and Celtic music, but also bluegrass, Western swing and Texas contest-style fiddle. I also play guitar, both standard and Celtic (DADGAD), piano, mandolin, recorder, penny whistle, mountain dulcimer, ukulele and Irish bouzouki.
I see each learner as a unique individual and cater my teaching approach to best suit their needs and interests.
