You do not need a gym membership to count PE. You need a contemporaneous log, a clear idea of what your state will accept, and enough variety that the hours look like physical literacy, not a Saturday of trampoline with no notes.
SHAPE America's 2024 National Physical Education Standards frame PE as motor skills, knowledge, social behavior, and a personal path toward being active for life, not as a building with bleachers. [1] Homeschool physical education can live in the backyard, the library rec room, a hotel hallway on a roadschool week, or a live online movement class. The paperwork is what makes it count.
This is a logging checklist, not a boxed PE curriculum. If you want named programs by grade, start with our homeschool health and PE curriculum guide.
Most hour-counting states care that the activity is planned, supervised at an age-appropriate level, and written down the day it happens. They rarely care whether it happened in a school gym.
Activities that usually belong in the PE column:
Activities that usually belong in another column, or only count if you document the movement piece:
If your state is hour-light, like Florida home education under s. 1002.41, you still want a PE log. Evaluators and high school transcripts ask what you did. See our hours-by-grade guide for attendance context.
You can meet the spirit of the 2024 standards in a two-bedroom apartment. Standard 1 is motor skills across environments. A hallway, a parking lot, and a park rotation still count if you name the skill.
Indoor swaps that log cleanly:
Travel week swaps:
Fall is a good time to add a weekly homeschool PE drop-in at a library, Y, or parks rec center. Write the location, the skill focus, and the minutes. Do not rely on the rec center to keep your records.
Keep one page per week. Fill it the same day. Florida's portfolio rule is a useful model even outside Florida: a log made contemporaneously with instruction, plus samples. [2]
Copy these columns:
Sample week for a fourth grader with no gym:
That is about 3 hours. High school credit usually wants more, closer to a Carnegie-style block if your state or umbrella school talks in credits. Elementary families can stay lighter if hours are not mandated.
File the weekly sheet with your other records. Our homeschool record keeping guide covers how PE sits next to reading logs and work samples.

Some families blend a parent-led hour log with a live class so the kid practices cues, rules, and group games they cannot get from a sibling. That mix still counts as PE when you write both the class minutes and the home minutes.
Browse live physical education classes when you want a teacher-led block, or add a co-op PE day and log it the same afternoon.
These patterns cause trouble in hour or letter-of-intent states:
Fix it by dating the entry, naming the skill, and splitting mixed days.
Yes, if you planned it as locomotor time, timed it, and wrote it down. An 8-minute potty walk does not become a PE credit.
Only the minutes the kid is moving or practicing a skill. A sports-history lecture belongs in social studies.
Not for most home education statutes. Umbrella schools and some high school credit policies are stricter. Follow the program you enrolled in.
Log dance, hiking, martial arts, swimming, yoga, or playground skill circuits. The 2024 standards care about motor skills and lifetime activity, not varsity basketball.
