*updated June 2020 to reflect the new edition

As we continue our journey through US History, our writing is going to gain even more description as we focus on summarizing multiple references (as we do with research), multi-paragraph writing, Inventive Writing, Critiques, and Formal Essays.

Each of these writing structures will be developed using material from the book covering topics such as Great Inventors, the Statue of Liberty, Nationalism, World Wars and more! Our focus will be on the lessons introducing new stylistic techniques and/or methods.

Because this curriculum is sequential and builds upon structure, you will already need experience with the first 5 units of IEW methods because we will not be spending time going back to those initial units. In this class, we will cover final 4 units for the IEW methods.

As we write, students will be experimenting with even more "dress-ups", sentence openers, and figurative language, to add style and interest to their topics. These will all be outlined in the weekly assignments.

During class, we will use discussion, modeling, games, and other learning techniques to reinforce vocabulary and style, while expanding our writing skills into report and essay writing.

Lessons & Structures covered will include:
Week 1: Oklahoma Land of Rush 1889 (fused outlines)
Week 2: Transportation Milestones (report format, very short sentence opener)
Week 3: Transportation Milestones (report format, bibliography structure)
Week 4: Hopes and Dreams (writing from the brain, body paragraphs)
Week 5: Hopes and Dreams (writing from the brain, intro. & conclusion paragraphs; clauses)
Week 6: The American Flag (creative writing, perspective, verb openers)
Week 7: Transportation Milestones (formal essay structure; introduction/conclusion)
Week 8: A Prominent American (formal essay)
Week 9: A Prominent American (formal essay completion)
Week 10: John Henry (character analysis) & Optional Vocabulary Story

Homework is required and assigned after each class to incorporate both the writing method and style (dress-ups). I encourage students to go through a process given in class as they complete their homework, and then they will submit their final papers to me. I will return papers with both positive and constructive feedback, not a letter grade. Students will be writing from a checklist, so students and parents will know exactly what is required for each assignment.

Vocabulary and literature suggestions will be given so students can use these to connect to their writing.

Students MUST have prior experience with Units 1-5 of IEW and/or have completed my first class on Writing About US History (Part 1), linked above AND be prepared for essay writing.

****Students MUST purchase the book below to participate in this class, as all assignments come from the book. I am unable to reproduce ANY PAGES from the books for student-use.*****
