Students may submit one draft of their essay to the instructor via Outschool's classroom feature .After viewing videos, an essay draft may be submitted. Word or Google doc preferred. Students may also post the essay directly in the Outschool classroom feature area.
Evaluación

Write a Powerful, Purposeful and Persuasive College Admission Essay!

Summer is the ideal time to complete college admission essays. Finishing essays early means less stress and more time to concentrate on researching scholarships, studying for the SAT or the ACT. It also In this four week class, learners will compose a final draft of their main college admission essays based on the CLT, Common app or the Coalition app. Learners will also complete supplemental essays for the college of their choice. This is not just a class of ideas. Learners will be expected to complete a draft and revise their drafts based on the feedback they receive. The 2022 prompts will be used so essays will ultimately be ready to submit when the class is completed. Only students serious about completing their admission essays, supplemental essays and scholarship essays should consider this class. 

These video lessons will guide your child in the process of writing a phenomenal essay for college admission and scholarships. This simple step-by-step method will help all students but is especially applicable for overwhelmed and special needs learners. Struggling writers will gain the most from this practical presentation. ADHD, dyslexia, and reluctant writers will gain the most from this presentation. If you dedicate a week to viewing the videos, you can quickly compose an essay and get it proofread and corrected , if necessary.

Students will respond to weekly questions posed by the instructor after watching each video, Students will also submit a final essay and receive feedback on their draft. Students are expected to correct grammar, spelling and syntax errors in their essays. This is a serious class. Students are expected to make changes and compose actual admission essays to be submitted to the Common App, coalition App or CLT.

Students will learn how to write a memorable college admission essay that will stand out to colleges.

Students will learn how to draw from their life experiences to write an essay that is moving and authentic.

Students will learn how to conquer the feeling of being overwhelmed when approaching essay prompts.

Students will overcome writer's block and compose a masterful college admission essay.


High school juniors and seniors should take this class to write powerful and memorable college admission and scholarship essays. Carter, a homeschooling mother, college English professor and guidance counselor with a post graduate certificate in “College Admissions” from Columbia University guides students in the process of college admission. Her experience, passion and practical help will give your child the edge in the college admission process.. 

Students may view the video classes and get feedback on their drafts in as little as a week. It is suggested learners compose more than one draft. Carter will read three drafts and suggest ways to improve your essay.

As a bonus, she will also read student resumes and make suggestions.

Session 1
Understanding the purpose of the admission essay and how to approach the essay:  This will be a time to choose a topic or subject that would make a compelling story. Class will brainstorm ideas and choose at least two, preferably three essays prompts (from the Common App, Coalition App, or  CLT ). Learners who have chosen their colleges should also submit supplemental and/or scholarship prompts or essay topics. Major goals: Students will learn how to structure the essay and how to plan the first draft of their admissions essay. Weekly question: How will you approach composing your essay?

Session 2
Practical ways to craft a memorable story that gets an admission’s officer attention. In this session essayists will learn how to make their stories powerful and memorable. They will learn it is not necessarily the topic you write about, but the approach of the story that makes an essay memorable. Learners will master ways to make their stories more powerful. Major goals:
Students will learn how to find something interesting and compelling to write about and learn how to compose a memorable essay. Weekly question: What story will you use for your essay? Activity: Post a draft of your essay or email for feedback. 

Session 3
How to make the essay exceptional. After revisiting the draft of their essays, this session will discuss practical ways to make essays stand out. Students will learn how to some writing techniques that make their writing more  powerful.
Weekly question: What writing techniques will you use in your essay to make it more memorable? Activity: Name three ways you can improve your essay. Post a second draft of your essay incorporating changes suggested by the instructor.

Session 4
Students will learn how to revise an essay. Students will learn how to improve their first draft and to compose a scholarship essay.
Weekly question: What makes your story so important? Activity: Post a final revision of your essay.

Summary of class: Students will watch videos. respond to questions and compose the first draft of their college admission and/or scholarship essay such that it is memorable, powerful and achieves the purpose of standing out from other essays. Students are also expected to submit a final draft to the instructor before the final class to receive feedback on their first and final draft. The lessons can be completed in a week. 

Four videos total course time: 1 hour

Students may advance through the videos and get feedback on their essays as long as they watch the videos to proceed through each step. This class is taught by a college professor who has a Graduate Certificate in College Admissions from Columbia University. She has advised many students over the years.

**** Optional:  Learners may make an appointment with the instructor once they have completed "ALL" their essays for one-on-one 20-minute session
