Students will be completing an observation sheet of their worm's structures as well as a class chart on structures and their functions. In addition to this, they will record data during their investigation and share that in our class discussion regarding the type of environment in which earthworms like to live.Experiencia de clase

Grado de EE. UU. Kindergarten - 3
Students will dive into a hands-on, minds-on investigation to learn about the structures that earthworms have to allow them to survive! They will then design their own investigation to test whether earthworms prefer a damp or dry environment and test their hypothesis! They will use live earthworms found in nature or from the local bait store to conduct their experiment and have a discussion with a PowerPoint and videos led by the teacher. The beginning of the class will involve students learning about the structures of their worms through a guided investigation led by the teacher with time for questions and inquiry. After they learn the structures of their worms, they will design an investigation to test whether earthworms prefer damp or dry environments. Students will share the results of their mini-investigations live on camera with their classmates and discuss why the results occurred based on what they learned in the earlier discussion. The teacher will ask guiding questions and offer insight to the students as they conduct their experiments and share their results.
Metas de aprendizaje
Students will:
Understand how earthworms help the soil in the garden and their internal and external anatomical structures and functions.
Investigate and describe which environments worms prefer; light or dark, damp or dry.
Gain an appreciation for earthworms and learn to treat them gently and respectfully.

Orientación para padres
This involves using live earthworms for observation. If students are scared of worms, they can opt out of using their own worms and observe the ones I share instead but it will hinder their overall experience.
Lista de útiles escolares
Print the student sheets to use during the lesson Ruler Coloring pencils shoe box sized container (plastic or cardboard is fine) (find a used one and recycle!!!) paper towels or napkins water earthworms (you can do the experiment with just one, but I suggest using at least 5 to get better results, find them outside or go to the local bait store or Wal-mart to purchase) Optional items: Hand lens/magnifying glass, scale to weigh your worm (kitchen scales are great for this)

Experiencia y certificaciones del docente
As an award winning science teacher and STEM faculty member, I loved bringing in opportunities for my students to explore the natural wonders of the world, including living organisms. I have taught lots of classes and camp programs involving things like earthworms and insects and have great hands on activities to share!
