The Uses of Geography
 Certified as a Social Studies Teacher in my state, I have taught Social Studies (including World Geography) for over 18 years, primarily at the Middle School level. My classes have had lots of fun and engagement with World Geography, delving into the wonders of 'oh so slightly' familiar cultures, as well as cultures that are dramatically different from the West. Students sparkle when engaging in special projects, conversations, Kahoot Challenges, interactive games and other teaching practices designed to help our students enjoy becoming a master of their own learning. Master's Degree (Public Policy), Bachelor's Degree (History), Teaching Certificate (State of Maryland) : Social Studies, History, Middle School Language Arts, 30 credits beyond Master's Degree.

Detalles: Students receive a report at the end of each unit showing attendance, completed projects and teacher comments. Students complete a Kahoot concept game at the end of each unit which serve two goals: review and formative assessment. Grades can be provided upon request. I base grades on completed weekly projects (one per week), Kahoot game quiz (may be completed on paper).
Each unit offers handouts on major concepts and vocabulary, a pre-teaching tool. Students build familiarity with topics before, during and after class; use practice links with interactive maps; choose differentiated homework.
No prerequisites for the class. Students are introduced to a range of skills and concepts. Instruction follows a 'spiralling' curriculum plan, where the teacher reviews concepts & skills as they appear and reappear in later meetings.
Each 4 week unit will include:

* a blank map provided in homework. Students may print the map to complete homework using a pencil/pen, or they may embed the digital blank map in a visual/graphics app that allows the addition of labels and symbols, digitally.

**(Printer not cooperating? Students may draw a rough version of the map by hand, then complete the labeling as directed in homework) ;

* a list of GeoBee terms reflecting unit vocabulary and concepts (this may be printed out for regular study and review, or reviewed in digital form) ;
* a menu of homework projects each week, posted in the classroom after each class (generally, homework options include both digital assignments & paper/pencil);
* a Kahoot game to review main vocabulary and concepts of the unit.

Suggested/Optional: For Kahoot games (week 4 of each unit), students may use two screens. With a PC, students can use two tabs (split screen with second screen signed on as answer device). Alternatively, students can use their normal screen for OS classes, plus another smart device like a phone or tablet for the answer device. If the second screen is not available, students can still play our Kahoot game, keeping track with a simple paper/pencil method.
Homework assignments are provided and encouraged but are not required for participation. For source material, students may access one or more of the following sites. These sites offer useful resources and give our students an opportunity to practice map skills, gather research information and extend their learning. For on-line best practice, students should use the link to a resource provided in our classroom and benefit from on-line supervision. No membership or sign up is required to access the links provided in class.
