El periodismo como herramienta científica para salvar a las orcas residentes del sur

During our first meeting, we will dive into an exploration uncovering the history and types of American journalism. Students will learn how journalism can help promote wildlife conservation efforts, deduce if sources are credible, and bridge the gap between public opinion and factual science. 

During our second meeting, we will have an engaging discussion on killer whale biology, behavior, adaptations, diet, and conservation threats. We will focus specifically on the Southern Resident Orcas in the Salish Sea during this engaging marine biology discussion. 

Learners will then be tasked with creating their very own newspapers focusing on the subject of killer whales. This project will require students to write articles on the Southern Residents of the Salish Sea as well as include a mock interview, and a comic. Students will present their projects to the class during our third meeting. We will end the discussion with a debate on the effectiveness of journalism as a scientific tool to promote conservation endeavors. 

The material will be presented in a varied format that includes biofacts, a slideshow lecture, and group discussions.  This course is highly immersive and does require some independent research as well as group participation in discussions in this STEAM class.
