In 1492, Columbus sailed the ocean blue...but everything you know about him is probably wrong! This class will counter the common narrative about Christopher Columbus. We will discuss the people that discovered him in the Caribbean, common myths about Columbus and the facts to counter those myths, and the results of his invasion. We will also talk about why Native peoples and activists are pushing to change Columbus Day to Indigenous Peoples Day across the United States. This class is taught from a Native American perspective, which for many people is one they may not have heard before. I will use a combination of lecture, PowerPoint, and video to teach this lesson. This is a lecture style class with some time for questions and answers. This class can be highly emotional or upsetting, so I give a safe space to process those feelings. It is not for sensitive learners.

Orientación para padres
We will be talking about atrocities commited by Columbus and the Spanish in the Americas. I will keep the content and discussion on this age appropriate, but it will include killing, maiming, genocide, and slavery. We will NOT be discussing the sexual abuse that took place. The PowerPoint slideshow includes historical drawings and paintings about the acts Columbus comitted, but they are the more mild ones of this type. This is not a class for sensitive learners.
