Have you ever had a conversation where you realized that the other person was completely misunderstanding what you were trying to say? Or you misunderstood what they were trying to communicate and you can't figure out how you came to the wrong conclusion? It happens all the time. It isn't what you say... it's how you say it, right? A huge part of being an effective communicator involves having a good understanding of nonverbal communications. Being able to read the unspoken clues from others AND being able to manage how we communicate with our own nonverbals makes communicating easier and more productive. Plus, it gives you confidence while speaking to others because you feel more in control! This ongoing course will let learners explore nonverbal communication cues by examining different scenarios and learning about all the ways humans express themselves. The course is designed to be very hands-on with interactive activities and discussions that explore different aspects of nonverbal communication skills. We'll decode different types of facial expressions and body language and have fun with it along the way. This class is meant to be relatable, educational, and fun! Each week, I will introduce a new topic related to Nonverbal Communications. At the start of each class, I'll quickly review what nonverbals are and how important they are in our daily communications, so all learners are up to speed. Learners do not have to attend each class because each week's topic stands alone, meaning the classes are not in a specific sequence that builds on each week's topic. At least two learners are required to run the class. Since students can join the class at any point, I will update the class descriptions regularly to let parents know which concepts we'll cover that week. The class will be on Friday afternoons each week. Week 1: The Stress Points- Jaw, Neck, Arms, and Shoulders Week 2: Born to Hand Jive, Baby: What are you doing with your hands? Week 3: Body Language: What Your Posture Says Week 4: Personal Space Cues: Setting and Respecting Boundaries Week 5: Facial Expressions- Eyes and the Brow Week 6: Nostrils and Lip Service (Go Ahead: Smile) Some of the additional topics I will be covering are… Deceptive Interpretations (Does it really mean you're closed off if you cross your arms?) People Say I Always Look Mad...or Bored... Identifying Specific Emotions from Nonverbal Cues Level of Activity Communications (I fidget too!) Puppy Dog Eyes- Manipulating Tactics I also love hearing different ideas from learners! So, if you have any ideas for a new topic or something specific you want to cover, please share them with me. I am so excited to see what you'd like to learn about because this subject is so large.

Students will have a better understanding of the role nonverbals play in our daily interactions. We often think what we said is what's been communicated to the listener, but that usually isn't so. Learners will improve their ability to correctly interpret the nonverbal cues of others as well as monitor their own nonverbal communications better. Doing so will help them become more effective communicators overall, but it also will help them feel more confident and secure in their ability to control what they are communicating with others.

Hello! My students know me as Mrs. Rae and I really enjoy facilitating discussions over real-life situations and adulting skills. Young people are on the verge of stepping out on their own, which is incredibly exciting, but also unbelievably terrifying! There are so many life skills that could help them get on the fast track to success! However, they have limited exposure to these concepts and skills. That's why I have put together interactive lessons that will help young people increase their capacity for critical thinking, professionalism, effective communication, leadership, and utilizing positive coping skills in order to be better prepared for the world after the high school years. These are skills everyone can use, whether their path lies in furthering their education, going directly into the workforce, starting their own business, or taking on a family business.
I also teach business and computer courses to provide practical lessons that will provide the technical skills learners can use to get ahead in higher education or any business setting they choose to go into!
My professional background starts with home health, where I worked with youth with developmental disabilities for 5 years. In that setting, I helped these children learn daily living skills to achieve their highest level of independence and complete their schoolwork. I was able to provide support and a safe learning environment for children with individualized and varied educational and learning needs.
I earned my degree in Developmental Psychology, which focuses on how the brain learns and develops over the lifespan. After graduation, I became a Behavioral Health Rehabilitation Specialist. Working with this population taught me what can happen to young people when they do not have support systems and access to education when they are struggling with mental health needs.
I got my teaching certification through the Oklahoma Department of Career Technology, and I taught Business Management Administration at a Technology Center for three years for juniors and seniors in high school. I teach basic computer skills, Fundamentals of Technology, MS Office Suites, Customer Service, and Accounting. My favorites, however, are the "soft skills". I love creating projects and discussions based around teamwork, leadership, coping in the real world, interview and resume skills, enhancing communication, presentation skills and public speaking, literacy and learning cheats, project and time management, financial planning, and any other life skills that we come across. Whew. I especially love critical thinking exercises, because we are all life-long learners so these skills come in handy!
Having worked in both education and mental health, I am sensitive to all types of learners, and I am very flexible in how we achieve our goals depending on the needs of those present. My goal is to meet learners where they are, ask for their input, be real about adulting and the skills they will need, and, ultimately, create a fun and interactive learning environment and collective social experience that is an inclusive space for everyone!
A little about me: I am a very proud Dog Mom, a green thumber (plant freak), the woods are my true home, music is life, and I am a super nerd when it comes to photography. Everywhere I go, I take a million pictures just to get that perfect one that captures the moment! It drives my friends and family crazy sometimes. Oh, and I can't stand the smell of cinnamon candy. Gross.
