"Night" is considered one of the first masterpieces of Holocaust literature. First published in 1958, it is the autobiographical account of an adolescent boy and his father in Auschwitz by Elie Wiesel.

Author Elie Wiesel was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the United States of America Congressional Gold Medal, the rank of Grand-Croix in the French Legion of Honor, and, in 1986, the Nobel Peace Prize.

CLASS CONTENT:
We will study this story to hear the first hand account of the Holocaust.

We will have literary discussions as we read. My discussions are primarily focused on what the reader has gotten from the book. I will have questions to ask, with the idea of helping the student become aware of possible areas to think about, however there will be no preconceived ideas forced on the reader. I am a firm believer in viewing art and reading books as having the purpose of being there to bring your own experiences and views to the work not what others tell you that you should see.

We will have a very socratic discussion, asking questions and discussing possible answers as we go. I am also familiar and utilize some of the Thomas Jefferson Education methodology of mentors, classics and discussion.

Classes will generally break-down as follows:

In the 1st Week no prior reading required.
We are going to discuss the basic known facts of the time period and what was happening. Briefly touch upon World War II, Hitler and general geography as related to this story.
Learners will be assigned to read first half of the book.

Each week we will discuss what we have read so far, any ideas or feelings that have come up from the book to this point. Will also make sure there aren't any questions or confusions.
Weekly targets will be:
2nd Week: Learners will be required to have read first half of book.
3rd Week: Learners will be required to have completed the story.

Personal Note:
Elie Wiesel was my husband's God Father. My husband's grandparents carried their tattooed numbers on them until the day they died.

Metas de aprendizaje

A more personal understanding of the Holocaust and what happened in Auschwitz.

Otros detalles

Orientación para padres
This book does cover a first hand account of life in a death camp, told from the perspective of a frightened teenager so extreme detail is not used.
Lista de útiles escolares
I would prefer if the learners are working off the complete trilogy book: "The Night Trilogy: Consisting of a Memoir, Translated by Marion Wiesel, and Two Novels", published in 2008. I will be referring to the introductions and preface found in that version of the book, as well as giving page assignments from there.

Experiencia y certificaciones del docente
I have lectured on the subject of human rights (specifically the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, a document created at the end of World War II) since 2015. In 2018 I received the Presidential Volunteer Service Award in Washington D.C. for my work in this area.

My children's heritage is greatly connected to the Holocaust, with my husband's God Father being the author Elie Wiesel, as well as both his grandparents carrying their numbered tattoos.

This may be a sensitive area to read about, but I believe my training and experience has prepared me to answer any questions that may come up.
