Phase 3 phonics introduces learners to the more difficult phonemes. Before going to phase 3 learners should have a good grasp of phase 2 phonics and blending and segmenting CVC words (consonant, vowel, consonant words such as mop, dog or cat). In phase 2 learners will cover the 19 most common single-letter sounds. Some sounds are made with one letter, such as /s/ and /a/; others are made with two letters such as /ck/ and /ff/. During class time we will also practice blending and segmenting words using the new digraphs or trigraphs. A digraph is made up of two letters that make one sound such as "ch" and "ar". Trigraphs is made up of three letters that make one sound such as "igh" and "ure". During phase 3 learners will also be introduced to tricky words such as "was" and "you". During each class, we will practice writing letters and tricky words, learners should bring paper or a whiteboard to class to practice writing. Learners will also be provided with printable worksheets to further support their learning. Week beginning March 20th: j and v / phase 2 tricky words review: to, the, no, go, I Week beginning March 27th: w and x / tricky word: he Week beginning April 3rd: BREAK Week beginning April 10th: y, z and zz / tricky word: she Week beginning April 17th: qu and ch / tricky word: we Week beginning April 24th: sh and th / tricky word: me Week beginning May 1st: th and ng / tricky word: be Week beginning May 8th: ai and ee / tricky word: was Week beginning May 15th: igh and oa / tricky word: my Week beginning May 22nd: oo (long) and oo (short) / tricky word: you Week beginning May 29th: ar and or / tricky word: they Week beginning June 5th: ur and ow / tricky word: here Week beginning June 12th: oi and ear/ tricky word: all Week beginning June 19th: air, ure and er / tricky word: are The course consists of 13 lessons that will continue to cycle. Learners may drop in and out as needed. Once completing one cycle of classes learners are welcome to stay enrolled to further practice or progress onto phase 4. Classes are kept small to allow us to ensure that each and every student is able to understand and grasp the concepts taught in class. Learners are always encouraged to ask questions and participate in discussions, but learners will never be forced to participate and talk if they do not feel comfortable doing so! Our aim is for learners to feel included and comfortable in class! If your learner has any unique learning needs or preferences, please don't hesitate to reach out to us so that we can ensure that they feel fully supported during class.
