"Let them once get in touch with nature and a habit is formed which will be a source of delight and habit through life." -Charlotte Mason Despite their vastly different surroundings, all students will be able to benefit from this class, as the goal of my lessons is to inspire students to notice even the smallest bit of nature, whether they have ample access to natural surroundings or the occasional sighting. Our first class will be a generalized lesson in the nature journaling process and various methods of journaling. The remaining lessons will be tailored to the specific students in the class, so we can focus on flora and fauna from each of their particular regions. This will allow for the students to gain identification skills that will be applicable for their individual nature explorations. The topics will be trees, birds, insects, wildflowers, and mushrooms. Each week, students will learn to identify several types of commonly found flora or fauna for the regions represented by our class. Each student will then choose one to focus on for their nature journal entry. They will be guided through the process of observing the details in their choice and documenting these details in their journals according to their own individual journaling style. We will utilize the following mediums for this class: watercolor painting, colored pencil, pencil drawing, and pen detailing. Please ensure your students have access to all of these supplies in addition to a watercolor journal (heavyweight paper is necessary for watercolor painting).

Experiencia y certificaciones del docente
I have over 15 years of experience in education from volunteering, homeschooling my own 6 children, teaching in private school settings, and personal tutoring. Ever since my childhood, I have loved exploring in nature, and drawing was one of my favorite hobbies growing up; however, I wasn't exposed to the concept of nature journaling until adulthood. I have had the privilege of teaching nature journaling to preschool, elementary, and middle school students for the past 5 years in both a private school setting and for homeschool co-op classes. Some of my favorite things about teaching this subject are helping students find simplicity in drawing what they see and watching the wonder and curiosity grow as students learn to really observe what is around them. I'm so excited to be sharing nature journaling with new students here on Outschool!!
