Did you know meteor showers are caused by a stream of cosmic debris entering the Earth’s atmosphere as we pass through a comet’s trail?! This one-time class is only offered right before a meteor shower. We will explore when and how the shower can be viewed, along with discussing what causes it to occur. We will also learn about the parent body associated with the shower. We will investigate questions such as: What is the difference between a meteoroid, meteor, and meteorite? What are comets and asteroids? What is an orbit? How are meteor showers named? Students will learn through lecture and discussion. 2022 meteor showers dates: Quadrantids - January 4, 2022 Lyrids - April 22, 2022 Eta Aquariids - May 5, 2022 Delta Aquariids – July 28, 2022 Perseids - August 12, 2022 Draconids - October 8, 2022 Orionids - October 21, 2022 South Taurids - November 4-5, 2022 North Taurids - November 11-12, 2022 Leonids - November 17, 2022 Geminids - December 13-14, 2022 Ursids - December 22, 2022

Hello! My name is Arwen, and I am absolutely passionate about space science, the environment, and teaching! I offer courses about the solar system, planets, natural processes, soil, and the environment. I am a NASA Solar System Ambassador and science author. My Master's is in Space Science, and I have undergraduate degrees in Agricultural Ecology, and Natural Resource Management. I am currently working on a doctorate in STEM education.
I believe curiosity and learning are human instincts. I try to honor that by asking the learners lots of questions and encouraging them to think about information in new ways.
When not teaching, you can find me hosting "Found in Space: A Science Podcast for Kids and Teens" or playing Dungeons and Dragons and exploring the Southwest with my three homeschooled kiddos and our cat named Eratosthenes!
I like to keep class sizes small so each learner can get individualized and full attention. Please feel free to reach out.
