An E-Certificate of Completion with grades will be provided for learners who have completed all sessions and actively participate in class activities, including sharing their work at the end of each meeting. This is a 18-Week Semester Series. Classes will meet ONCE every week through the course of the curriculum.

Students will embark on a journey into landscape sketching and painting. They will learn to harness various materials and perfect fundamental drawing skills through quick sketching exercises, they will refine their powers of observation and acquire the essentials of depicting landscapes' key elements such as sky, land, water, trees, and more.  As the semester evolves, students will use paint as a medium, exploring color theory, composition, and perspective, paving the way for the creation of rich, lifelike scenes. They will develop techniques for mastering natural lighting, atmospheric effects, natural and urban landscapes.

As students progress, they will learn of historical landscape artists, studying their contributions and the different styles along with the work of contemporary landscape artists, and investigating the current trends and the diverse array of approaches present in today's landscape art world. The semester will wrap up with students embarking on individual landscape sketching projects, emphasizing personal expression and storytelling through their creations. Through the exchange of ideas and feedback with peers and the guidance of a dedicated teacher, students will not only develop technical skills but also uncover their unique artistic voices in the realm of landscape sketching and painting.

Week 1: Introduction to Landscape Sketching & Painting
• Importance of landscape sketching in art.
• Introduction to sketching and painting materials.
• Refresher on drawing skills, including line work, shading, and blending.
• Quick sketching exercises to improve observation.
• Basic color theory and the color wheel.

Week 2: Elements of a Landscape
• Study of the key elements in landscapes (sky, land, water, trees, etc.).
• Techniques for sketching different landscape components.
• Sketching exercises on soft and hard elements with colored pencils.

Week 3-4: Composition and Perspective
• Understanding composition and perspective in landscape art.
• Practice exercises in creating depth and dimension.

Week 5-6: Capturing Light and Atmosphere
• Techniques for depicting natural lighting and atmospheric effects.
• In-depth exploration of color mixing and color harmony.
• Creating color palettes for specific painting projects.
• Practice painting different times of day and weather conditions with acrylic.

Week 7-8: Natural Landscapes Painting
• Painting rural landscapes, countryside, and natural scenes.
• Exploration of trees, mountains, rivers, and open spaces.

Week 9-10: Urban Landscapes Sketching
• Sketching cityscapes, buildings, and urban environments.
• Emphasis on architectural details and city atmosphere.

Week 11-12: Art History and Landscape Artists
• Study of famous landscape artists and their contributions.
• Analysis of different styles and historical context.

Week 13-14: Contemporary Trends in Landscape Art
• Exploration of contemporary landscape artists and their work.
• Discussion of current trends and diverse approaches in landscape art.

Week 15-16: Landscape Projects with Live Scenes/ Photo References
• Students work on individual landscape sketching projects.
• Emphasis on personal expression and storytelling through landscapes.
• Encouraging students to explore diverse landscape styles, from realism to abstraction.
• Sharing with peers and receiving teacher feedback.

Please read below for frequently-asked questions on our policies:

Mandatory Video Check-In
Video check-in is mandatory for safety purposes per Outschool policy. Students are required to have their cameras on to allow the teacher to check in and verify each learner. After check-in, students have the option of either turning off their camera or leaving it on, whatever is their preference.

Refunds & Missed Classes
All of our classes are backed by Outschool’s standard policy. To receive a full refund, parents may withdraw or stop their subscription within 24 hours of payment OR 24 hours before class starts, whichever occurs earlier. No refunds are issued if a learner misses a live meeting. Recordings are made available in each classroom and can be watched at their convenience. Students are always welcome to reach out with any questions and share their work in the classroom.

Class Recording Access
Learners must JOIN A LIVE CLASS ONCE in order to lift Outschool's safety protocol and unlock access to video recordings of class meetings. Learners who have not attended a live class but need access to the recordings must contact verification@outschool.com to apply for a lifetime verification badge.

Late/ Missed Class
All classes will begin on time as long as one learner is in the classroom. In the event that no students are in the classroom at the assigned class time, the teacher will leave a message in the classroom and exit after ten minutes of waiting per Outschool policy.

Minimum Enrollment & Class Cancellation
A minimum of two learners is required for every class to run. In the event that we have to cancel a class, parents will be notified within 24 hours of class. Learners will have the option of either transferring to a more populated section of the same class or receiving a full refund, whichever is preferred.

Technical Difficulties
In the event of class delay/ cancellations due to unforeseeable technical issues, all families will be notified and a make-up section will be posted, or a refund will be issued if a make-up class cannot be scheduled.

By the end of the course, students will have honed their abilities to skillfully depict the essence of landscapes and will have acquired a deep appreciation for the rich history and contemporary trends in landscape art.

Teacher Allie May is a contemporary artist who loves to indulge in all mediums, but focuses most on drawing and painting. She is a graduate student in the BFA program at California State University Long Beach, and aims to pursue a career in teaching art. Her art influence began at a young age, but she considers herself “self-taught.” Allie is passionate about encouraging students to master the fundamental skills and technical aspects of creating, but also develop a style that is unique to each student. Her promise is to encourage a mindset where students are confident in themselves and their ability to create.
