Genética: ¡Una receta para ti! (8 a 12 años) (Flexible)

In this flexible schedule class, students will not meet live each week, but will instead view video lessons and complete assignments on their own time over the course of 4 weeks. By the end of the 4 weeks, students will have an understanding of basic Genetics. Topics covered include the difference between genes, chromosomes, and DNA, heredity and family history, and the path from genetic information stored in DNA to creating proteins.

Here are the topics to be covered each week:
Week 1: Introduction to Genetics: What is DNA?
Week 2: Heredity: Where did I come from?
Week 3: How does my body "read" DNA?
Week 4: Genetic Diseases

As a flex course, we will not meet live in person. Instead, every week I will post a lesson video. After watching the video, each student will complete a research project on a topic from that week's lesson that they found most interesting. (After all, a big part of science is research!) Then, they will record a video telling the other students and I what they learned from that week's research.

Each week, students will:
1) Watch lesson video (participate in pop quizzes throughout)
2) Complete review quiz/game of choice (via Quizlet; link will be provided)
3) Record video research project (a detailed rubric will be provided)
4) Participate in discussion board (we'll discuss students' questions)
I will post a weekly announcement with detailed instructions for the week's activities.

Students will interact with each other by responding to video projects and participating in the discussion boards. I will also interact with students by giving feedback on each video project and by facilitating discussions/answering questions on the discussion board.
