Nivel Beginner
In this 12-week online course, students will progress to the level of Early Intermediate in the Japanese language. This class focuses on speaking, listening, and basic reading/writing skills. Class members will meet 2 times per week. The first meeting of each week will be lecture-style (with plentiful interaction) and focus on introducing the Japanese phrases for the week and discussing study strategies. Since students will already have a strong basic understanding of Japanese from Semester 1, this course will focus on building sentences and learning phrases for specific situations (e.g. eating at a restaurant, checking out when shopping). In this class, we will also begin learning the written language. Each week, we will learn 10 new characters in Hiragana or Katakana. Between meetings, students are encouraged to practice their Japanese on their own to improve their skills. A handout will be provided after the first meeting of each week listing the words and phrases used in that lesson. The second meeting of each week will be a conversation/reading practice and student-led discussion. This meeting will provide students with the opportunity to practice what they studied during the week in a conversation setting. Please reference the class syllabus for information about the course curriculum. This class is designed for students who have completed my “Japanese for Beginners: Semester 1” course.
