Grado de EE. UU. 9 - 12
This six-week course will introduce learners to concepts in physics, chemistry, and biology. There will be a two week focus on each field of science. Week 1 - Gravity and Scientific Method of Experiments (Physics) We will cover the calculations associated with gravity. We will have fun doing gravity experiments (dropping things) and discussing the scientific method of writing up experiments. We will discuss what worked and did not work in the experiments and what the results mean. The scientific method of how to write up a science lab will be covered. Week 2 - Kinetic and Potential Energy and Forces (Physics) We will cover calculations associated with kinetic and potential energy in a fun way by doing marble run experiments. We will discuss what worked and did not work in the experiments and what the results mean. A discussion on forces will be covered too. Week 3 - Introduction to Periodic Table (Chemistry) An introduction to the periodic table will be covered in this course. Topics will include the concepts of atoms, elements, brief trends in the table, orbitals, and electron dot configurations. Students will learn about s and p orbital modelling, and d and f orbitals will mentioned, but not covered. Electron dot configurations will be introduced so that a learner would have a rough understanding of what elements would bond to other elements to form compounds and molecules. Week 4 - Essential Life Elements of Carbon, Hydrogen, and Oxygen (Chemistry) Leaners will gain knowledge into the chemistry of the elements of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen, and how they bond into molecules that are essential to life. Oxygen in air, water, and carbon molecules will all be discussed. Molecules containing carbon, oxygen, and hydrogen will be investigated from an electron configuration level to understand chemical bonding. Carbon bonding and molecular formation will be considered for sugars, fuels, alcohols, and carbon rings compounds. Week 5 - Cells (Biology) Learners will learn all about cells - from movement through the cell plasma membrane to types of cells to the laws of thermodynamics related to biology. Meiosis and Mitosis will be touched on as well. Cell reproduction, DNA, and chromosomes will be introduced. Week 6 - Genetics (Biology) We will learn about DNA and RNA as well as Mendel's laws of genetics and the Punnett square the predicts the probably of genetic traits. Alleles, phenotypes, and genotypes will be covered and some cool genetic traits that can be unique and fun. I like to include learners in discussions and I ask open ended questions that learners may answer if they wish. Printouts will be provided for some classes and learners may use them to take notes during class or practice later as homework. Learners may actively learn in class or they may prefer to just watch. Everyone learns differently and all learning styles are welcome.
Metas de aprendizaje
Learners will gain an introductory understanding of physics, chemistry, and biology. Younger learners may take away some concepts and still be pondering some of the concepts. Older learners will be given a very good introduction to be well prepared for higher grades in high school. The hope is that learners learn basic concepts in these fields and get excited to know that there are lots of amazing new things to learn.

Licenciatura en Ciencia desde University of Waterloo
Hi, I'm Trudy Field. I have a Bachelor of Environmental Chemistry degree from the University of Waterloo. I love to make teaching fun. Students learn best when learning is fun. I like to make the class interactive and entertaining.
I have always loved to teach and coach people. I love those a-ha moments when someone learns something new and experiences the happiness in knowing a skill has been mastered.
I like to tutor chemistry, physics, biology, and math courses at a junior high and high school level. I like to teach fun parts about these subjects and the fundamentals that would help a student understand parts of high school courses. I have tutored many high school students.
Coaching figure skating has been a passion of mine for over twenty years. I like to figure out how people learn and to interact with different personalities.
I believe students learn best when taught in a fun way. I like to allow a bit of autonomy in a class. While coaching skating, I offer choices of what we'll learn next - like spins or jumps. We'll inevitably cover both during that session or by the next session. I like to try to be fun in class and will allow a little bit of fun after setting guidelines to ensure learning is still the priority.
A fun project I did this winter was build a backyard skating rink! I did it through stomping the snow and then flooding the backyard with water. My son and I rigged up a simple flooding machine too!
