I’m a certified teacher with 31 years of experience, and teaching the Consumer Math and Practical Math unit was one of the highlights of each year for me! Join me as we dive into a crucial and often overlooked topic that surprisingly few schools address: consumer math and practical finance! It's astonishing how this essential knowledge isn't included in every curriculum. I believe these concepts should be introduced at the elementary level and built upon each year until graduation. In this class, you’ll explore: Credit Cards – Just charge it! With average credit card debt over $8,000, how did we get here? Explore how expenses like Amazon purchases, vacations, and dining out contribute. Budgets – Examine various salaries and learn how to budget for essentials and discretionary spending. Insurance – The necessary but confusing world of health, dental, vision, and home insurance. Vacation – The temptation to “just charge it” and how that impacts credit card debt. Investments/Stock Market – Discover how starting to invest $100 per month at your first job could lead to over $500,000 by retirement with a 10% return. I've even taught this topic to elementary kids, and they LOVED it! Bills – From rent or mortgage to cable, internet, and gym memberships, learn how to manage and anticipate these ongoing expenses. Buying a Car – Understand the costs involved in leasing or buying, including insurance, gas, repairs, and tires. Renting vs. Buying a Home – Weigh the pros and cons, including additional insurance considerations. Shopping – "I NEED that super cute shirt...just charge it...it's on sale, better get 2." The pitfalls of impulsive purchases and sales. Learn to navigate spending habits with awareness of your budget. Sports Statistics - Explore the world of sports statistics! Whether you're interested in viewing math from a fresh perspective or analyzing the stats of your favorite sports teams, this is your chance to dive in. Let's go! Your Interests – This is flexible to cover any specific topics you're curious about! Let’s uncover practical financial skills that should be a staple in every education.
