The goal in creating a comic is that peers can read and understand the comic without explanation.

My goal is to create a fun, creative learning environment where students can comfortably learn and share their ideas with others who also love comics. Students will bring their imagination to life, invent unique characters and stories, and have the opportunity to share their art with other students. This class is great place for aspiring authors, comic artists, and game developers to create characters, illustrate their backstory, and develop a style. Students will have the opportunity to share their work with other students live during the lesson, and/or share an image of their finished work in the classroom forum.

Day 1-- Intro to Comics, Genres, & Drawing Movement
Students will introduce themselves and share their favorite comics (if they have one). Discuss and categorize popular comics into story genres: Marvel and DC universes, Superman, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Dogman, Bone, shoujo and shonen manga, graphic novels, etc. I will give a quick demonstration on how to draw and design a character and show it "moving" in 3 panels. Then students will create a three panel comic with a step-by-step action sequence.

Day 2-- Analyzing Stories and Planning a Comic
We will analyze popular superhero stories to learn about the parts of a story: plotline, protagonist, antagonist, genre, location, character design and development. Students will write a quick outline of a story on a story-builder worksheet, including short descriptions of characters and location. I will demonstrate how to use the worksheet to organize the story into comic pages or panels. For students who "don't have any story ideas," I will demonstrate how to use a random story generator like a madlib to create a unique story. Fast writers can spend the rest of the class designing characters and the location for their story.

Day 3-- Putting the Pieces Together
We will look at some historical examples to compare how various cultures read and write comics-- left to right, backwards, zig-zag! Students will compare with English and design their panel order and word bubbles. Teacher will check in with students one-on-one to assist with story-pacing, clarity, etc.

Day 4-- Action!
We will look at how comic masters show character movement and think critically about what body language can communicate about a character. Students will share how their methods for drawing action, movement, and body language signals.

Day 5-- It's all a matter of Perspective
I will give a quick overview of basic perspective techniques and how they can be used to create dynamic effects in a comic, or just make sure that your character looks "right" sitting in a chair or walking down the street. We will have time for trouble-shoot problem topics and sharing final works at the end.

Orientación para padres
Warning: Comic books, especially superhero comics, sometimes contain violent conflicts, violent images, and weapons. While I discourage my students from creating gore for gore's sake and generally consider guns to be the most boring weapon in a story, my focus in these comics classes is to help students communicate a story that makes sense, not to attempt to remove the violent element from the superhero genre. If you as a parent find violence distasteful or do not wish your child to depict violent images, please discuss this with your learner.
