The graphic novel is a booming format for young readers. In this ongoing course, learners will read passages from a variety of graphic novels and complete activities aimed to improve reading and writing skills. We will focus on skills such as fluency, intonation, vocabulary, reading comprehension, grammar, syntax and complex writing. The class will also include art projects for a variety of learning! (We have to create our own comics and graphic novels!) Another goal of the class is to build discussion and critical thinking skills. Learners will be encouraged to formulate opinions and share ideas in their own words. They will also tackle larger questions about life and morality. We will have lots of fun discussing the books, our favorite characters and so much more! Each class will use a variety of teaching methods to engage every type of learner. Classes will include reading out loud, worksheets, peer review, quizzes, videos and much more. Learners will be challenged to question what they know and draw connections between the books and the real world. You may notice some books repeat themselves. We will read new passages from the books, as well as discuss new themes and complete different activities. Learners are not required to own any of the books we will be reading, nor do they need to read every book in full. Each week, learners will be provided with all the materials they need via the classroom. 📚 What's taught in this course? 📚 Each week we will focus on a new book from the series. We will read a portion of the book in class, and then we will complete related activities. Sutherland Week beginning 24/3/25: "Lo and Behold" by Wendy Mass and Gabi Mendez Week beginning 31/3/25: "Class Act" by Jerry Craft Week beginning 7/4/25: "Odessa" by Johnathan Hill Week beginning 14/4/25: "Paper Girls" by Bryan K. Vaughn Week beginning 14/4/25: "Persepolis: The Story of a Childhood" by Marjane Satrapi Week beginning 28/4/25: "Belonging" by Nora Krug Week beginning 5/5/25: "are you listening?" by Tillie Walden Week beginning 12/5/25: "Spinning" by Tillie Walden Week beginning 19/5/25: "Poppy! and the Lost Lagoon" by Matt Kindt Week beginning 26/5/25: "The Rift" by Gene Luen Yang Week beginning 2/6/25: "Sheets" by Brenna Thummler Further topics to be added. 📚 About my Qualifications 📚 I have been an English teacher and tutor for more than 7 years. Metas de aprendizaje
There are three skills we aim to develop in this course: reading, writing and discussion.
Learners will get better at reading aloud as they develop their fluency, rhythm, intonation and expression. Students will also build on-the-page skills such a reading comprehension, summarizing, making predictions, contextual thinking and vocabulary.
Learners will also develop general writing skills such as sentence structure, grammar, spelling, paragraph formation and more.
Finally, students will learn to formulate their own opinions and share their thoughts with others clearly and effectively. They will also build critical thinking skills through exciting discussion.

Making sure my learners feel safe, understood and comfortable in my class is my highest priority. We may discuss some sensitive topics in this class relating to the graphic novel we are reading that week. While all of the activities in this course will focus on building English and writing skills, some of the stories may address the following topics. We may also discuss the topics as a way to practice reading comprehension, critical thinking, and persuasive writing.
Topics:
- Eating disorders
- War
- Depression and anxiety
- Sexuality
- Homophobia
- Racism
Stories are carefully selected to ensure they address these topics in a way that’s appropriate for kids and young adults. All of these stories fall within the young adult genre or are commonly taught in middle-grade English courses.
All of these topics will be discussed in an unbiased, secular and inclusive manner. If you have any questions about what will be covered and how, please do not hesitate to reach out.

Hello! My name is Kristin, and I absolutely love teaching on Outschool. My goal is to build engaging classes centered around my two passions: writing and science.
Although writing and science seem like two completely different topics, they can be taught simultaneously to build a deeper understanding of both subjects. For example, I offer an ‘Essay Writing Through Scientific Exploration’ course, in which students study fascinating science concepts, and then write structured essays about their findings. Whether your learner is a scientist or a writer, they will learn new skills while deepening others.
I have been an English teacher and tutor for more than 7 years, and I have two university degrees in English and writing. This experience allows me to offer a variety of entirely writing-focused courses as well. I offer both ongoing classes and semester-long, full curriculum courses in writing and English language arts.
I have to admit, some of my favorite classes are creative writing classes. I've been writing creatively since elementary school, and I think telling stories is so much fun! I’m a published author, and I love sharing my passion with learners.
In terms of science, I have been a STEM teacher for more than 3 years. I trained at the NASA Glenn Research center, where real engineers taught me the best principles for teaching STEM to young students. While working for my local library, I hosted a STEM summer-day camp, ran a weekly science club, taught students how to use 3D printers, and coached a LEGO League.
My journey as an online teacher began as an ESL teacher with VIPKid and Magic Ears. This gave me essential skills to make virtual learning impactful. Ultimately, my varied experience allows me to make classes that are specific and unique, while simultaneously engaging and fun. There is a lot to cover, but my hope is to offer a curriculum that no other teacher has before.
When I'm not teaching, you can find me writing, reading, playing video games or baking. (Especially bread.) My favorite thing to do is hike with my best friend. (Who happens to be a 60-pound puppy named Gus.)
