In this class, we will explore Kathryn Erskine's book, "Mockingbird" through a mix of learning and fun. Students will be able to lead the discussion based on their observations and what they enjoyed, but I will also have some open-ended guidance questions in case we need extra discussion material. Students will share a creative project each week relating to wha they read. Between classes, students will have additional activities to explore the story more. This story is about an autistic girl (referred to as “Asperger’s” in the book as its terminology is a bit outdated) and her grieving process as she recently lost her brother. Students will get a better look at autism, and as an autistic woman myself, I will help guide those discussions. NOTE: students will need to read the assigned chapters BEFORE class so they are able to participate.
