1 hora por semana. Learners will receive poetry prompts and mentor texts to use each week and practice those techniques in their own writing.

Nivel Beginner

In our class, we will complete an ice breaker to get our writing brains going! Then we’ll look at a poem together, write our own poem like that poem (or just write!) and share our work together! There will always be time left for writers to share work done outside of class they would like feedback on!

Week 1: Week of 3/17: Where I'm From by Willie Perdomo and George Ella Lyon 
Week 2:  Week of 3/24: Letter to the Playground Bully by Andrea Gibson
Week 3:  Week of 3/31: Litany for Survival by Audre Lorde
Week 4:  Week of 4/7: We Wear the Mask by Paul Laurence Dunbar 
Week 5:  Week of 4/14: To Pimp A Butterfly by Kendrick Lamar 
Week 6: Week of 4/21:  Class Choice

Metas de aprendizaje

Students will complete no less than 5 writing pieces of their own incorporating techniques such as, but not limited to,  metaphor, simile, theme, alliteration, assonance, and allusion.

Students will read  6 mentor texts

Expressing yourself is for everyone! Learners with special needs will be accommodated with alternative mediums, writing stems, and graphic organizers as needed

We may read poems political in nature or that raise marginalized voices.

Fuentes

We will read poems by authors such as Willie Perdomo, Andrea Gibson, Audre Lord, Paul Laurence Dunbar and Kendrick Lamar. We will use the the expression and techniques of these writers and try them on for size in our own writing!

I was a high school English teacher info ten years before moving to a role where I now create curriculum for English teachers in 13 schools . I’ve also taught composition at the college level. I ran a slam poetry team for two years where we won 2nd place in the region. I’ve been a writer and poet since I was 6 years old.
