Hotep (Peace) Family! Are you ready to learn about Africans around the world? This class invites all learners, new or seasoned, to investigate these exciting topics. Ms. Sydney loves to use discussion, videos, slideshows, images, art, and other hands-on activities to dive deeper into each lesson. There will be plenty of fun going on as we learn new things about the African world. Each class will begin with a discussion prompt and transition into the lesson/region of the week. The major portion of class will be spent doing the activity of that week and if time allows, close out with a mini game that assesses and reviews what we have learned up to that point. Students will have ample opportunity to ask questions, discuss with peers, and express what they've learned. By the end, learners will know all about the African global presence and influence. The activities each week require specific materials for hands-on projects. If the learner does not have access to these materials listed, they can always substitute with good old paper and a pencil. The materials just make for a more immersive experience. Here is a week by week breakdown for this 10 week class: Week 1 Imhotep the multi-genius of Kemet Materials: building blocks, paper plate, & colorful fruit (pomegranates, blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, watermelon, whatever you have!) Orientación para padres
Instructor will be using google slides to present information. Students do not need to access this on their own. Instructor may show videos to support the lesson of the week. Videos will be age appropriate and directly related to that week's topic. Videos can be sent out to parents in advance if necessary. Some of the materials used will require parental guidance such as: scissors, glue, paint, clay, and water. Adequate space, shoes, and hydration will be needed for the Afro Samurais lesson, as we will be doing a short yoga meditation. The final class will require adult supervision as we will be creating the seasoning for Independence Soup. Parents should chop vegetables prior to class in order to reduce risk for injury. Please review ingredient list prior to class to be sure it is free of child's allergies. Clips of live performances of Fela Kuti will also be used. Songs will be free of explicit content and can be posted in classroom prior to class. All topics will generate meaningful discussion and curiosity. The instructor will take care to handle these topics honestly and with care.

I have taught & developed several African social studies/ELA courses and curriculum for learners 5-13. I use my experience as an Afrikan descendant and continue ongoing research into these topics. I take care to navigate sensitive topics and create space for learners to relate to the material. I approach the material with honesty and respect for Afrikans across time and space. Parents/learners can always feel free to ask me for more material to continue their research into the topics after/before class.
