Your Brain on Books! Exercising our Brains through Reading
Did you know that reading actually changes the structure and chemistry of our brains? In this course, we will use brain-based research to engage in reading activities that stimulate neurons, accessing new pathways to deeper understanding.
Class experience
US Grade 5 - 7
Students will read each selection before class so that we can engage in more thorough and nuanced discussions during class. I will provide coaching on how to annotate text to make deeper connections. Each selection will be provided a week in advance with questions to guide pre-reading activities. Week 1: Salvador Late or Early, by Sandra Cisneros (fiction) - This is a character study centering on the theme of burden and invisibility. We will discuss the author's craft and use of color....
Students will build deeper connections to texts they explore through close reading strategies, questioning, and peer discussions.
I am a 27 year veteran educator. I have a background in teaching, instructional coaching, and school/district administration. I have a master's degree in Curriculum and Instruction and a doctorate in Educational Administrator. I studied under Dr. Lucy Calkins in the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project at Columbia University.
