US Grade 3 - 4
Each of the classes is independent and new learners may join at any time. Comprehension is the goal of reading. This on-going course is focused on the critical reading skills and strategies needed for students to move beyond emergent reading skills or the LEARNING TO READ stage, to the READING TO LEARN or comprehension stage. It involves gaining meaning from what is read. Comprehension is not an inherent skill, but one that is interactive and strategic. To be a good reader, learners must learn to analyze, make sense of and make a personal connection to what they have read. A different reading skill will be taught and modelled by the teacher each class. Learners will be actively involved in brainstorming, reading-aloud, shared-writing, learner collaboration and individual practice. There will be a strong connection made between Reading and Writing. I teach in a fun, engaging and supportive way. I see children as natural problem-solvers and I value their input and the ability to learn from their peers. Learners will learn to use a variety of graphic organizers, text features and background knowledge to make sense of what they have read. Learners for this class should be beyond the Emergent Reading Stage. They should have good fluency at their current reading level and be able to decode new words. This is a reading to learn class, not a learning to read class. The following reading strategies will be taught, modelled and practiced in this course. Learners can take one class, several classes or all. The lessons will focus on both fiction and non-fiction texts. All sections follow the same topics for weeks 1-15.
