Students will listen to the book, With a Little Help From My Friends, by John Lennon and Paul McCartney, illustrated by Henry Cole. We will discuss how the authors/musicians and illustrator chose a theme for the lyrics and then used the illustrations to tell a the story. We will then discuss the theme of friendship and what it means to each of us and its importance. Then each student will use the song lyrics they brought to class to brainstorm a theme for a picture book based off of them. We will then share our song and the theme for a picture book. If students are interested, they can create a picture book based off of the work done in this class.
Learning Goals
Students will learn about book themes and how to choose a theme based off of song lyrics of their choice. They will learn how to phrase and section out a picture book. They will also discuss the importance of friendship and what it means to themselves and others.
