Students will identify setting, characters, rising action, conflict, climax, falling action, and resolution of the story. Students will explore cultural representation in the text by comparing and contrasting their own experiences with elements of the story using drawing and guided reflection. Students will learn about the Southern Gothic genre and identify elements in the book series. Students will identify elements of horror, mystery, fantasy, and paranormal literature genres in the series. Students will learn communication techniques in order to participate in group discussions.
As a Librarian and a certificated English teacher in California, I led many book clubs and literature discussions.
Homework Offered
Learners will read half of each book (about 70 pages) independently each week.1 - 2 hours per week outside of class

Students will need the book or audiobook for each of the 4 books in The Haunting of Derek Stone series: City of the Dead, Bayou Dogs, The Red House, and The Ghost Road. The books are paperback, and I obtained them at my local library.

While the books are written for children, they do contain descriptions of accidents leading to death, ghosts, and the paranormal. Some students might be upset by the themes of the books. We will have engaging discussions and activities in class using Kahoot, Quizlet, and Google Jamboard. No registration is needed for any resources.
