Class Experience

We will be doing a deep dive into the hidden nature of the game of chess. This class is for anyone who's interested in understanding this game better, whether they have any experience or not. No previous knowledge required.

We'll be covering:
~The most basic chess principles
~The true nature of the chess board
~The pieces and what they represent
~The objective of the game
~Making each move count
~How to win fast
~Game skills that overlap with everyday problem solving

Class will consist of three parts; the first 25 minutes will be dedicated to an upbeat, yet thought provoking lecture that will lead into 25 minutes of open discussion and interactive play, where students will be allowed and encouraged to test these concepts in real game scenarios. The final 10 minutes will be reserved for student questions, regarding any specifics that come to mind after seeing these concepts in action. I will be teaching using lichess.org for gameplay and a soundpad with some wacky sound effects to help with retention. Students should feel free to cooperate with one another during the interactive play segment of the lesson.

Learning Goals

Learners will improve their understanding of a few simple concepts, which can be used to fully master the game of chess. A full grasp of these concepts should lead to an increase in win percentage. Students will also learn to repurpose these skills for solving real life problems.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello!

My name is Mr. Matthew and I teach Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced chess/chess theory! I've been teaching chess for 15 years and I've spent half of that time working exclusively with children. I believe in a hands-on approach that enables young learners to get in the game as quickly as possible, and that the best way to learn is by doing!

I also volunteer to mentor young men in my community through a program started by my lifelong friend. We teach them to uphold strong moral values, the importance of entrepreneurship, and to tackle self-discipline early on in life because we believe it's easier to raise strong men than it is to fix broken ones!
