Our chess club is like an expanded version of our interactive lessons. Students will be encouraged to take the reigns in their chess development and play each other freely, while I help facilitate gameplay, and supply students with exercises, and discussions tailored to their playing style. Meetings will be structured as follows: 1. Daily Puzzles - Solving chess puzzles is a great way to train your mind in preparation for a big tournament. It develops your sharpness and mental agility needed to solve complex positions. Every grandmaster incorporates solving puzzles into their training system and so we should take a leaf from their book. 2. Free Play and Discussion - Students will be allowed to play each other or the instructor, while we discuss chess theory, history, and even chess world news. I will supervise gameplay and give instruction as needed. We will be using lichess.org for gameplay and students will need Parental Guidance to create a kid's profile beforehand. 3. Game Analysis - After gameplay ends, we will go through as many games as we have time for and examine each position as a group to discuss possible moves and sharpen our understanding of positions and the psychology behind our opponents' moves. I will be teaching using lichess.org for gameplay and a soundpad with some fun sound effects to help with retention. All exercises will be interactive, with students able to try different solutions to puzzles and cooperate with one another to find the best answer. This class is for those who know the pieces and have already learned the basic rules of the game. If you are completely new to the game, I suggest taking my Beginner Level 1 Course before enrolling in this course. You can find the Level 1 Course here: https://outschool.com/classes/dark-horse-tactics-intro-to-chess-for-beginner-level-1-dxaYlQH5?sectionUid=12d08c51-6ad5-4fdc-a530-431186003860&showDetails=true
Learning Goals
Students will gain confidence in their gameplay and learn to apply their newfound chess knowledge in real time. Students will also develop key social skills in a small and intimate setting where we learn to listen effectively and feel safe enough to share our ideas.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello!
My name is Mr. Matthew and I teach Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced chess/chess theory! I've been teaching chess for 15 years and I've spent half of that time working exclusively with children. I believe in a hands-on approach that enables young learners to get in the game as quickly as possible, and that the best way to learn is by doing!
I also volunteer to mentor young men in my community through a program started by my lifelong friend. We teach them to uphold strong moral values, the importance of entrepreneurship, and to tackle self-discipline early on in life because we believe it's easier to raise strong men than it is to fix broken ones!
