Private lessons provide students with a level of attention and personalization unavailable in group settings. Students are free to progress as quickly or as slowly as they are comfortable with and are able to benefit from the flexibility in the curriculum. Depending on the student, lessons can be broad and basic, such as: • Rules of the game • Names and movements of the pieces • The phases of a chess game • Basic tactics Or they can be focused on high-level concepts, including: • In-depth lessons on specific openings and traps • Good and bad pieces • Positional chess • Important mating patterns Wherever the student currently is in their skill level, personalized lessons can help them improve by leaps and bounds because there are no other students to rush them or slow them down. There is also no prefabricated lesson plan they have to stick to, so they have complete control over how and what they learn. I will be teaching using lichess.org for gameplay and a soundpad with some fun sound effects to help with retention. All exercises will be interactive, with students able to request any topic, as well as any changes to the lesson structure. This class is for any student of any skill level who prefers to move at their own pace.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello!
My name is Mr. Matthew and I teach Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced chess/chess theory! I've been teaching chess for 15 years and I've spent half of that time working exclusively with children. I believe in a hands-on approach that enables young learners to get in the game as quickly as possible, and that the best way to learn is by doing!
I also volunteer to mentor young men in my community through a program started by my lifelong friend. We teach them to uphold strong moral values, the importance of entrepreneurship, and to tackle self-discipline early on in life because we believe it's easier to raise strong men than it is to fix broken ones!
