Did you know that some whales can dive up to 9,000-ft below the surface? Or that a dolphin's nose is on top of its head? In this one-time STEM class about whales, dolphins, and porpoises (the cetacean order), we will explore the traits that these animals share and the traits that make them unique. We will learn about their social structures, their ability to communicate, their diet, their highly intelligent behaviors, and even how they care for their offspring. We will discover the amazing places these marine mammals live and how some species are able to survive in murky rainforest rivers and others in the freezing arctic. We will also dive into the conservation threats that cetacean species are facing and how we can help protect them. Using photos, GIFs, and videos in a Google Slide presentation, we will see first-hand how incredible these organisms are. This class will start by giving learners the opportunity to introduce themselves and their favorite species of cetacean. As we explore the Google Slides, learners will be able to share facts and ask questions to establish a relationship with other animal-lovers in the class. I will wrap up our session by taking any final questions. I'm so excited to meet your learner and explore the amazing world of cetaceans.
Learning Goals
Students will be familiar with basic natural history information regarding cetaceans.
Students will feel a love and respect towards cetaceans and a desire to protect them.
Students will feel connected to other animal-loving kids who share their passion.

Hi there!
My name is Sarah and I am so excited to explore wildlife, science, and conservation with your learner. I was born and raised in the Metroparks of Ohio, but I currently call the Sonoran Desert of Arizona my home.
I have had a strong love for wildlife and nature for my whole life and have built my career around it. In 2017, I graduated cum laude from Arizona State University with a B.S. in Conservation Biology and Ecology. I am a Certified Environmental Educator in Arizona and a Certified Interpretive Guide through the National Association for Interpretation.
After college, I worked on several wildlife studies in the field studying species like the western diamondback rattlesnake, spectacled rattlesnakes, and Bahamian rock iguanas. I gained experience as an informal educator developing programs for schools and homeschool students at the Phoenix Zoo, Shedd Aquarium, South Mountain Environmental Education Center, and SeaLife Aquarium.
At the start of COVID, I founded an organization that creates wildlife and conservation STEM resources for K-8 students, including a science curriculum program that teaches core science subjects with an engaging animal twist.
My greatest objective as an educator is to make science FUN. My classes cover important science topics while using wildlife and nature as our driving forces.
