Objectives and challenges for sharing videos of themselves will allow for assessment and feedback.Assessment
Learners are encouraged to demonstrate the techniques practiced between classes through uploading videos. Discussions with other learners harbors an environment of facilitation, but the instructor will also include other resources that follow the direction of learner discussions.Class Experience
A vocalist's instrument is their body! Generating consistent vocal tone, whether during high or low notes and long or short notes, can be done with 3 fundamental instrumental techniques: diaphragm, relaxation, and enunciation. In this flex course, the instructor demonstrates the importance of each of these foundational skills in consistent vocal tone with engaging videos, apps, and online resources for continued practice beyond our coursework. Learners will interact with the coursework and fellow learners through discussion prompts, active research, and recording challenges for feedback from other learners and the instructor between weekly work while developing our unique, individual voices. Recording challenges include audio and/or video to be listened to and watched by other learners through partner work and group work via classroom discussion area to assess the techniques being implemented from materials provided. Observations are given as text, audio, or video recordings as well so that learners can demonstrate their abilities to teach one another and show their critical thinking skills.
Learning Goals
Applying proper use of the diaphragm for breathing and engaging, relaxing the throat, posture, face muscles, and mind for unobstructed air passage, and enunciating to access tone-generating cavities of the skull are proven techniques for generating consistent tone for all genres and singers. Week 1 focuses on utilizing the diaphragm for deeper breaths, flexing for support with higher notes, and introduction to belting. Week 2 coursework is all about relaxing the body and mind so the air fills our vocal instruments instead of being hindered by tension. Week 3 is filled with enunciation techniques to work the mouth muscles so that all parts of the skull are generating our desired tones for high and low notes. Week 4 puts all of these techniques to work together in order to challenge each learner to make these foundational skills great habits for future vocal endeavors.
