If you loved designing and coding games with the Kodu program in my video game design class, continue the fun in part 2 of the course.

Class experience

US Grade 2 - 5
Intermediate Level
6 lessons//6 Weeks
 Week 1
Lesson 1
Scoring
Students learn how to use variables in coding to keep track of points in a game. They are able to add points and subtract points from the container (variable) based on events in the game. Students also learn how to trigger a win screen after a certain number of points are reached.
 Week 2
Lesson 2
Timer/Survival Games
Students learn how to create a timer in their game using variables and scoring that gives the player a certain amount of time they have to survive in the game to win.
 Week 3
Lesson 3
Teleporting
Students learn how to use portals they create to teleport a player from one of the part of the game to the other. This requires the use of creatables in Kodu, which are saved characters and objects that can be reused (spawned) during gameplay. Students also practice active listening as they share ideas on other ways teleporting can be used in a game.
 Week 4
Lesson 4
Character Transformation
Students learn how to use advanced coding logic to switch between playable characters in a game.
 Week 5
Lesson 5
Checkpoints
Students learn how to create save points in their game so a player can save progress as they progress through a game world. They are also introduced to the concept of using variables to signal to objects in the game that they need to run a behavior at a certain time. For example, when students get to a checkpoint, a point is scored. This point then signals the previous checkpoint to turn off.
 Week 6
Lesson 6
Final Games
Students come up with a plan for a final game that requires them to apply the skills they have learned in this 2nd class. Students then work on their game and share it with the teacher at the end.
In this class students will learn to......
--Create variables in coding to store data in their code.
--Use variables to keep track of points.
--Use variables to keep track of time in a game.
--Code objects to spawn characters for teleporting and checkpoints.
--Use pages/advanced logic to switch between player characters in the game.
--Use sub-routines/nesting in their coding.
--Create more complex and interesting games.
I have been teaching technology, coding, and 21st century skills for nearly 15 years. I am a certified elementary teacher in PA and have a Masters Degree in Curriculum and Instruction. I also have run my own educational technology business in the past. My goal is to help kids learn the skills they need in today's world, but also help them believe they can be the creators of new technology instead of simply consuming it.
Homework Offered
Assessments Offered
Informal Assessment: At least 2-3 times during the class, students get a chance to share the game they are creating with the class. During the share, the teacher highlights creative aspects of their game and makes suggestions when appropriate. The goal of this is really to highlight students' creativity and point out that everyone has the ability to produce unique and creative content.
Grades Offered
Students should have taken Video Game Design (Beginner Coding: Part 1) prior to taking this class.
Important: Kodu currently only runs on Windows. Please test running Kodu prior to signing up for the class. Kodu is a free download at https://www.kodugamelab.com/
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
This class requires students install Kodu Game Lab on their computer. Kodu currently only runs on Windows. Please test running Kodu prior to signing up for the class. Kodu is a free download at https://www.kodugamelab.com/

Kodu does give students the option of creating an account, but that is not required to used Kodu. If a message pops up asking to create an account, students can hit cancel to skip the message. An account is not necessary.
