The learner's progress and comprehension skills are observed through informal assessment, in observation of their game designing.Class Experience
Don’t just play video games, make them! Students will learn to create a platform style video games, like Mario Bros or Sonic! But they will be doing them in a "Stop Motion" or "Claymation" style, where they design their characters from actual craft materials! Students create games using “kid friendly” Clickteam Fusion with the Kids Coding Template. It’s a great introduction for the younger kids! They will learn the mechanics behind the video games, explore simple level design, and controlling flow of gameplay.. Much of the class is focused on the students designing their own characters and objects using craft materials, whether it be clay, toys, or other materials. And, I very slowly introduce the coding stuff to them a little bit a time. If the child wishes for a class more focused on the coding aspect, and at a slightly more quicker pace, I do have other app coding class for that. If you are looking for a class on making Stop-Motion movies, I have classes on that too. Check out my profile or message me, if you have any questions. 🚨 Please download and test prior to starting the class. The Mac's newer updates have been listing the Clickteam Fusion as an "unidentified developer". If you get this message, it may require a few steps to get it running: https://appleinsider.com/articles/16/04/13/how-to-install-and-run-mac-apps-that-dont-come-from-the-mac-app-store 💡 If Clickteam is installed on the same computer as Zoom, it would be easier for students to show what they are doing, if they need help. They could also be able to show their classmates what they created. 💾 See 'Supply List' below for link to download the free Clickteam Fusion app and Kids Coding Template. ITINERARY: 【Day 1】 ✔️ Introduction & Slideshow ✔️ Student watch example stop motion title animation videos. ✔️ Show sample films by students. ✏️ In between class times, students think up what type of characters will be in their video game... 【Day 2】 ✔️ Students design their Clay/Craft Characters and objects. Example objects that they can create: Grass (made out of clay, paper, pipe cleaners, or real grass), Trees (made out of clay, paper, a branch from a tree), House (made out of paper, clay, cardboard, wood), rocks (made out of clay, paper, or even be a real rock), clouds (made out of cotton, clay, or paper) 【Day 3】 ✔️ Students continue designing their Clay/Craft Characters and objects, if they haven't finished. ✔️ When characters are finished, students will take pictures (with a digital camera or smartphone) of their character against an empty colored background. (Instructor will show an example on how this is done.) ✔️ If students are finished early, they will watch some example Stop Motion animation shorts. 【Day 4】 ✔️ Direct Instruction: Students will first be introduced to Clickteam Fusion. They will see example games. Students learn the basic part of setting up a frame. They will learn how to use Clickteam Fusions built-in animation software to import their Stop Motion designs. 【Day 5】 ✔️ Direct Instruction: Students will follow along with the teacher as he shows them how to put together build a basic game. ✔️ Students will design their own game(s), with assistance from the instructor. 【Day 6 - Day 7】 ✔️ Students learn how to add music, sounds, special effects to their application. They will also learn briefly about the properties, settings, and coding sections. Students learn where they can set the build type (exe, apk, etc.) to save their files are in the properties. They will leave their build types set to HTML5 for the lesson. 【Day 8】 ✔️ Direct Instruction: Students will follow along with the teacher as he shows them how to export their game project into an HTML5 app. Students can play their game pretty on any mobile device or computer. ✔️ Student Practice: Students will practice compiling their web-pages into HTML5 code with assistance from the instructor. They can try building other applications (like EXE or APK) as well. ✔️ More Game Design Practice: Students will continue coding their own page, with assistance from the instructor, and updating their HTML5 files at the end of class. No background experience is required. Materials Needed: ✔️ Computer (Windows Preferred, but Macintosh would also work. Doesn't work on Chromebook.) ✔️ Clickteam Fusion * The Free Version of Clicktream Fusion (which only makes html5 apps), can be found here: https://www.clickteam.com/clickteam-fusion-2-5-free-edition * Or you can get the Paid Version of Clickteam Fusion, which is here: https://shop.clickteam.com/usa/41-game-app-creation * Or you can get "Games Factory" which is just like Clickteam Fusion (and costs less), but only builds Windows apps, which can be found here: https://shop.clickteam.com/usa/41-game-app-creation 🎈 Kids Coding Templates - These will be available to download when you sign up for the class. ⚠️ Please make sure Clickteam Fusion is installed prior to class. If you have any difficulties with the installation, feel free to message me. This is a LIVE class and is NOT pre-recorded. This class will be presented via camera from the instructor. He will have one camera at his face and another will be a shared screen where the students can see what he is dong on the computer, so that the student can see the instructor as speaks, and be able to observe step-by-step what the instructor is doing. Students can interact with the instructor, as well ask ask questions during instruction. No writing or independent reading is necessary. Students are expected to communicate with the teacher. Communication, visuals, and hands-on instruction are all the things that I are important in helping the students get a better understanding of the subject.
Learning Goals
Students will learn to use their artistic and creative talents to communicate and tell a story.
Students will learn to design their own characters, from 2D sketch transitioned to 3D Clay models.

Hi, my name is Raymond Mullikin. 👋
I am a professional cartoonist and credentialed teacher from San Luis Obispo, California.
I teach classes in Cartooning, Comic Book Printing and Publishing, 2D Cartoon Animation, Claymation/Stop Motion, Toy Figure Design, Video Game and App Coding, Creative Writing, etc.
I am also a professional illustrator/writer and Creative Director for Raytoons Comics. The Raytoons website is at Raytoons.Net. I have published cartoons in books, magazines, newspapers, and e-cards. I am an app designer who have designed my own games and software for schools and Appstores. I have also done past work in animation, creating animated film shorts for film festivals around the world.
I graduated from the University of Laverne with a Teaching Credential (2012) and a BA in Liberal Studies (2009). I also have certifications in Early Childhood Education, Technology and 2D Design. I've worked in education for 20+ years (including a few years in Special Ed) and have been doing contract teaching since 2009. I teach art and technology to children and adults of all ages.
How students approach a learning task can strongly influence the quality of their learning outcomes. For me, my approach is often very hands on (kinesthetic) with a lot of visual examples... That's how I've learned things, with a more creative approach. I have a lot of this in my instruction, with a mix of direct and interactive instruction with lots of Experiential Learning hands on!
It is also important to me to get feedback from both children and parents... Some kids have some very clever ideas! And, in teaching, there is always room for expansion of ideas and improving oneself.
I love drawing, comics, writing, creating my own games, and reading. Pretty much everything that I teach I enjoy and do professionally. I also enjoy teaching and thank all the parents and students willing to give me a try! 😃
