Informal Assessment: During the class, students get a chance to share the maps and devices they are creating with the class. During the share, the teacher highlights creative aspects of their creations and makes suggestions when appropriate. The goal of this is really to highlight students' creativity and point out that everyone has the ability to produce unique and creative content.

US Grade 5 - 8

Beginner Level

Beginner UEFN  Class- This is a class for students ages 10-14 that are new to creating maps, devices, and experiences using Epic's Unreal Editor for Fortnite.  This class also covers beginner coding concepts using the VERSE coding language.

Future-Ready Skills-- CreateDiscover classes integrate future-ready skills into the curriculum to help prepare students for a rapid-changing future.  This class includes exercises that help students learn about the concept of human-centered design.  As students develop their Fortnite devices in the class, they learn how to use observations, feedback, and analysis to design useful devices for players.

Students in this class get a chance to create custom Fortnite maps, devices, and experiences while being introduced to using Epic's Unreal Engine.  UEFN is a special version of Unreal engine that is specifically designed to help creators customize Fortnite experiences.  Students will also get a chance to learn a new coding language developed by Epic called Verse.  This emerging language is focused on helping create rich virtual worlds with advanced device interactions.  During the class, students will learn how to model their own custom devices and code player interactions with these devices.

Unreal Editor For Fortnite 

Minimum System Requirements
--Operating System-- Windows Based Systems Only (Does not work on a Mac).
--Windows 10 64-bit version 1909 revision .1350 or higher, or versions 2004 and 20H2 revision .789 or higher.
--Processor-- Quad-core Intel or AMD, 2.5 GHz or faster
--Memory-- 8 GB RAM
--Graphics Card-- DirectX 11 or 12 compatible graphics card
--AMD (21.11.3+) and NVIDIA (496.76+)

Students will also need to have Fortnite Installed on their computer to test maps.

Learning Goals

-Use landscaping tools and available Fortnite content to create custom maps.

-Add available VX effects like smoke, fire, lighting and more to maps.

Syllabus

8 Lessons

over 8 Weeks

Lesson 1:

Introduction to UEFN

 Students are introduced to setting up a basic map (island) in Fortnite using Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN).  They learn how to navigate the editor and use premade devices and elements in their maps.

Lesson 2:

Landscaping Tools

 Students learn how to create custom landforms in their map using the landscape editor.  They add things like mountains, water features, and visual effects.

Lesson 3:

Introduction to Verse

 Students are introduced to using the Verse coding language in UEFN.  They start by learning how to setup code and use it to code a premade creative device to change properties during gameplay (ex.  make a device disappear and reappear).

3D Modeling

 Students learn how to 3D model a custom device using UEFN's available modeling tools.

Other Details

Parental Guidance

Fortnite is a third-person shooter game with some FPS (first-person shooter elements). There is no blood or gore in the game. While the focus on this class is on custom maps and devices, parents should be aware that the game involves the use of weapons. A good comparison to Fortnite would be laser tag.

Supply List

Students need to install UEFN and Fortnite on their Windows based PC for the class.  Please follow the installation instructions you receive after signing up for the class.
